Sammlung verschiedener Aufsätze, Artikel, Vorreden, Kommentare und Rezensionen Ruhnkens in schönem zeitgenössischen Halbleder. - Der ursprünglich aus Wittenberg stammende David Ruhnken (1723-1798) siedelte aufgrund der in Deutschland wenig verbreiteten griechischen Philologie in die Niederlande über, wo er bald einen Lehrstuhl an der Universität Leiden besetzte. Er pflegte enge Freundschaft zu Tiberius Hemsterhuis und übernahm später das in Leiden angesehene Amt des Universitätsbibliothekars. Ruhnken befasste sich ausgiebig mit der Geschichte der griechischen Literatur, besonders der Literatur der Redner, mit den Homerischen Hymnen, den scholia oder Platon und den griechischen und römischen Grammatikern und Rhetorikern. Eine zu seiner Zeit berühmte Entdeckung war, dass im Text des Werkes von Apsines über Rhetorik ein großes Stück von Longinus eingebettet war. Der moderne Blick auf die Schriften, die Longinus zugeschrieben werden, haben das Interesse an dieser Entdeckung reduziert, ohne das Verdienst darum zu schmälern. - Lederrücken mit unmerklichen Spuren einer entfernten Rückensignatur. Bezugspapier schwach berieben. Titel mit sauberem Ausschnitt ohne Textverlust fachmännisch restauriert. Durchgängig schwach stockfleckig, die ersten und letzten Seiten ein wenig deutlicher.
