Significantly sunned spine and front cover, leaving circle-shaped sunned area on approx half the front cover. Spine head bumped with several small nicks, also approx 2in tear on spine/front board edge, repaired with sellotape. Spine tail bumped with some small nicks, also small split on spine edge/lower front edge. Corners softened and slightly worn, exposing the boards, except for upper back leading edge. Small nick and wear on lower edge exposing board. Minor edgewear/bumping. Front and back hinges are cracked, exposing binding threading. FEP is detached, has 3in tear on leading edge, repaired with sellotape. Libray label on FEP; catalogue sticker on spine. Page edges slightly tanned throughout, not affecting text. No Jacket. 1882 edition. 3 volume set, each with an interesting bookplate under their front boards in which Mr Alexander Buchanan (Assistant Professor of Humanity) was presented this set, along with 22 other volumes, by the Students of the Junior Class as a "Mark of their Regard and Esteem". The boards of each are shelf rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is some age-related tanning and foxing throughout the set, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages remain neat, legible and complete. The bindings are secure. Masson's true scholarly prowess lay in his Milton editorials. His magnum opus was his 'Life of Milton in Connexion with the History of His Own Time'. His library edition of Milton's works first appeared in 1874.These three volumes contain Milton's minor poems as well as his famous epic poem, 'Paradise Lost'. Retaining half titles. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards, and gilt detailing to back strips. A touch of fading to back strips, as is common with blue calf, and with light rubbing to centre of boards. Internally, firmly bound.
