These works form a pivotal part of a larger assemblage, some of which were originally showcased across European museums between 1977 and 1978. This exhibition mirrors a similar display that took place in early 1995 at the Liechtensteinische Staatliche Kunstsammlung in Vaduz.The Ratjen Foundation has curated its collection over the past thirty years, commencing with significant studies by renowned artists Guercino and Giambattista Tiepolo. In 1972, the addition of important Italian drawings from the estate of esteemed German photographer Herbert List expanded the collection, contributing eighteen pieces currently included in the exhibition. The collection has since grown through acquisitions from various other notable sources, encompassing works from publicist Richard Tiingel and publisher Bernhard Funck, among others. Particularly noteworthy is the influx of exquisite pieces from London's vibrant art market and the recent prominence of New York as a crucial hub for acquiring Old Master drawings. A highlight is Canaletto?s depiction of The ?Giovedi Grasso? Festival in Venice.The foundation, established in 1976, aims to provide a stable institutional framework for its rapidly growing collection, which comprises Italian Old Master drawings and German works from 1600 to 1900, with a focus on the Romantic period. This exhibition features fifty carefully selected drawings, curated to exemplify the artistic mastery of each featured draftsman, prioritising quality and immediate viewer engagement over the mere fame of the artists.
