Hard Cover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. Illustrated by David Barker (illustrator). Stated First Edition. First Printing. Quarter bound in publisher's yellow cloth over blue boards, red lettering on spine. Illustrated with several drawings by David Barker. "Nothing is as big a mystery as nothing. From the hatred the digit "zero" inspired in the ancient church and the horror vacui suffered by thinkers such as Aristotle to the tantalizing singularity of black holes, nothing packs quite a wallop. People, not nature, abhor a vacuum but are often fascinated by what repels them. Cole (The Universe and the Teacup), a science columnist for the L.A. Times, prods at the infinite properties and manifestations of nothing, trying to get a handle on it without boxing it in. Definitions make something out of nothing, but then, she indicates, everything did come out of nothing. Comprising an expansive set of topics from the history of numbers to string theory, the big bang, even Zen, the book's chapters are broken into bite-sized portions that allow the author to revel in the puns and awkwardness that comes with trying to describe a concept that no one has fully grasped. It is an amorphous, flowing, mind-bending discussion, written in rich, graceful prose. As clear and accessible as Hawking's A Brief History of Time, this work deserves wide circulation, not just among science buffs." - Publishers Weekly. K.C. Cole (born 1946) is an American science writer, author, radio commentator, and professor. She has authored eight nonfiction books, notably the bestseller "The Universe and the Teacup: The Mathematics of Truth and Beauty," which has been translated into a dozen languages, and her memoir about her late mentor, Frank Oppenheimer, "Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens: Frank Oppenheimer and the World He Made Up." In 1995, she was awarded the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award and has covered science for The Los Angeles Times since 1994. She is currently a professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. . Soft Cover. Zustand: Near fine. First Edition. Two hundred and eighty-nine individual designs illustrated in one hundred plates are drawn from woven and decorated items made in the Royal Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan during the last two centuries. The designs are displayed in clear diagrammatic form. The designs of Bhutan, whilst unique in nature, have been nurtured over many years and also contain elements of influence from China, Tibet and Nepal. This Mahayana Buddhist kingdom portrays its thoughts, aspirations, imagination and beliefs in the weaving art for everyday use in clothing, decorative panels, carpets and religious coverings and other items. Religious symbols, animal and plant life, natural phenomena, everyday objects, tradition, mythical and geometric forms and a range of border elements are included which can be transferred to colorful and unusual uses. 124 pp., fully illustrated with 9 pp. in colour. Light soiling of top edge; othersie a new/unread copy. Size: 30 x 21 cm.

"Three hundred individual designs illustrated in one hundred plates are drawn from woven and decorated items made in the Royal Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan during the last two centuries. The designs are displayed in clear diagrammatic form, making the traditional and classical designs from this great weaving country available for the first time to craftspeople and others who appreciate using traditional designs for their work and pleasure.".

Good clean copy.NATO ASI Series B: Physics Vol. 251.The technological means now exists for approaching the fundamentallimiting scales of solid state electronics in which a single carrier can, in principle, represent a single bit in an information flow. In this light, the prospect of chemically, or biologically, engineered molccularscale structures which might support information processing functions has enticed workers for many years. The one common factor in all suggested molecular switches, ranging from the experimentally feasible protontunneling structure, to natural systems such as the microtubule, is that each proposed structure deals with individual information carrying entities. Whereas this future molecular electronics faces enormous technical challenges, the same Iimit is already appearing in existing semiconducting quantum wires and small tunneling structures, both superconducting and normal meta devices, in which the motion of a single eh arge through the tunneling barrier can produce a sufficient voltage change to cutoff further tunneling current. We may compare the above situation with todays Si microelectronics, where each bit is encoded as a very arge number, not necessarily fixed, of electrons within acharge pulse. The associated reservoirs and sinks of charge carriers may be profitably tapped and manipulated to proviele macrocurrents which can be readily amplified or curtailed. On the other band, modern semiconductor ULSI has progressed by adopting a linear scaling principle to the downsizing of individual semiconductor devices.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The area of high field transport in semiconductors has been of interest since the early studies of dielectric breakdown in various materials. It really emerged as a sub-discipline of semiconductor physics in the early 1960's, following the discovery of substantial deviations from Ohm's law at high electric fields. Since that time, it has become a major area of importance in solid state electronics as semiconductor devices have operated at higher frequencies and higher powers. It has become apparent since the Modena Conference on Hot Electrons in 1973, that the area of hot electrons has ex tended weIl beyond the concept of semi-classical electrons (or holes) in homogeneous semiconductor materials. This was exemplified by the broad range of papers presented at the International Conference on Hot Electrons in Semiconductors, held in Denton, Texas, in 1977. Hot electron physics has progressed from a limited phenomeno logical science to a full-fledged experimental and precision theo retical science. The conceptual base and subsequent applications have been widened and underpinned by the development of ab initio nonlinear quantum transport theory which complements and identifies the limitations of the traditional semi-classical Boltzmann-Bloch picture. Such diverse areas as large polarons, pico-second laser excitation, quantum magneto-transport, sub-three dimensional systems, and of course device dynamics all have been shown to be strongly interactive with more classical hot electron pictures.
