Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 256 pages. In recent years, the media has been awash in exuberant tales of the arrival o f the information superhighway, when television will explode with exciting possi bilities, offering some 500 channels as well as a marriage of TV and computer th at will provide, on command, access to the lates…t movies, magazines, newspapers, books, sports events, stock exchange figures, your bank account, and much, much more. And the major TV networks, pundits add, will be doomed to extinction by t his revolution in cable, computers, and fiber optics. But in Television Today an d Tomorrow, Gene Jankowski--former President and Chairman of the CBS Broadcast G roup--and David Fuchs--also a former top executive at CBS--tell a different stor y. They predict a bumpy road ahead for the information superhighway, and the maj or networks, they say, are abundantly healthy and will remain so well into the n ext century. The information superhighway, Jankowski and Fuchs admit, will drama tically increase the distribution channels, but it will have little impact on th e amount of programming created--and this may spell disaster. The authors show h ow the networks began as a way to provide programs to local stations (who could not afford to produce their own), who in turn provided the distribution that gav e networks access to mass audiences and ultimately large advertising dollars. Th ey then offer us an inside look at television production--showing us, for instan ce, a veteran scriptwriter putting together a breakfast table scene for Cloud Ni ne--to underscore how much effort goes into producing just two minutes of primet ime programming. They reveal that the present 20 channels require some 20,000 ho urs of programming each year, which is more than all the Broadway plays produced.

329 pp.; 30.4 x 25.5 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white & color; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed; Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held at the Tate Modern, London, October 13, 2009 ? January 10, 2010. Traveled to Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, February 5 - April 25, 2010…; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, June 20 - September 12, 2010 and to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October 17, 2010 - January 9, 2011. Edited by Leslie Jones and Jessica Morgan and with contributions by Marie de Brugerolle, Bice Curiger, Douglas Eklund, Russell Ferguson, Rainer Fuchs, Tim Griffin, Friedrich Meschede, David Salle, and John C. Welchman. "A major figure in contemporary art, John Baldessari is widely considered one of the most influential artists to emerge since the mid-1960s. From his early text-and-image paintings to his more recent photo collages and installations, Baldessari has continued to make art that addresses the social impact of mass culture, often playfully through strategies of appropriation and deconstruction. Baldessari's lifelong interest in language, written and visual, and the interaction between the two, raises questions about the nature of communication and perception. More than 400 illustrations are presented in full color in this monograph published in conjunction with a major exhibition organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Tate Modern in London. Eleven essays by critics, curators, art historians, and an artist and former student of Baldessari's round out this volume. Few contemporary artists have achieved the range and relevance of Baldessari's oeuvre, which is finally given its due in this elegant retrospective book." --publisher's statement. Very Good / Fine. Light rubbing of cover edges, otherwise Fine. Contents clean and unmarked. Due to size and weight of this publication additional shipping charges will be required for international orders.
