The five diverse authors have used three "paired-themes" for the analysis of the American government--the constant tensions between conflict and resolution, continiity and change,m and power and consent. This work is considered by some knowledgeable academics to be one of the most innovative, comprehensive and impactful foundational texts used in the middle of the Twentieth Century, during a time of domestic foment (the Civil Rights movement, etc.) and international upheaval (the Cold War and the Vietnam War), as well as a period of at times rapid social, economic and technological change. An important 'marker' as to the state of the art, the state of knowledge, and the state of educational practice and a major historiographical resource. In den WarenkorbGrey printed Card. Zustand: Good-VG. 1st ed. Issued as Bulletin 60. xx+396; library donation label verso front cover - no other library markings, inscribed top front endpaper 'To Professor Pear/ with best regards/ Herbert Hyman', front gutter incipiently opening towards top but in no immediate danger, outer corners all slightly curled outwards at either end of textblock, otherwise clean, tight and unmarked bar a few brown flecks; coversfairly clean but corners slightly rubbed, browning/sun-fading to spine and top edges, tiny rather compressed ink inscrip.top front corner 'Prof Pear/from Herbert Hyman' in same hand (presumably Hyman's) as internal inscription, bottom and front edge region of spine dark stained, top front joint slightly splitting and top spine chipped, this has been sealed with translucent archival tear repair tape but remains rather unsightly. Despite faults this just about warrants a G-VG rating. Very scarce account of the 1948 Presidential election which is famous for being wrongly called for Dewey (consistently with most pre-election polls) until the early hours of the morning after when it became clear that Truman had in fact won. The discrepancy was very much a focus and indeed stimulus for this report.
