Professor Allinson values Lucian more as a satirist and writer of comedy, than as a philosopher. Lucian was a sincere crusader against shams, inherited or new: the pagan gods, the complex of contemporary philosophies, pretenders in history, hypocritical legacy-hunters, vulgar collectors of books and above all the superstitions, major and minor, of his time.
