Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket).; 25 x 32 cm; 2.4 Kg; 325 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; Used book. Interior as new. Signs of wear on the hardcover cloth. Lacks the dust jacket.;The Garrett Collection, one of the most fascinating and certainly one of the carliest American collections of Japanese art, contains a varied selection of inro and other lacquer objects from the Muromachi period (1392-1573) to the Meiji period (1868-1912). Among the artists represented is Shibata Zeshin, one of the most celebrated lacquerers of the nineteenth century, as well as members of the Koma, Koami, Kajikawa, lizuka and other families of lacquerers. Also included is the collection of netsuke, a small but interesting collection featuring a variety of subjects and styles. The last section of the book is devoted to a large collection of mask netsuke. This latter section illustrates one of the largest assemblages of mask netsuke in the West and presents entirely new scholarship to the field. The very rare and comparatively unknown private collection of lacquer, inrõ and netsuke was carefully amassed by T. Harrison Garrett and his son John Work Garrett just after Japan was opened up to the West. In 1942 the collection was left to the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. A virtually undisturbed first generation collection, it provides a valuable insight into the collecting habits of the time. Watercolour illustrations of the objects sent by John Work Garrett's trusted agent, Captain Masayuki Kataoka, for approval before purchase, all contribute to give a fascinating background. Combining their knowledge of the collection are Neil Davey, a director of Sotheby's and expert on Japanese art, and Susan Tripp, Executive Director of Old Westbury Gardens and former Director of Museums and Chief Curator for the Johns Hopkins University. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.5 x 31 cm; 2,456 Kg; 564 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear. The dust jacket has edge wear, and scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. Good condition overall.; The famous Hindson collection of Netsuke, sold at Sotheby's in a series of seven sales between 1967 and 1969, is the mos important and all-embracing of its kind ever to have come up for auction. The sales led to a greatly increased international interest in this Japanese miniature art form. Neil K. Davey, who has been responsible for the documenting and cataloguing of Sotheby's Japanese sales for over twelve years, has founded his book on the information he acquired while working on the items in the M.T. Hindson collection. He has supplemented this information with a considerable amount of further material based on other collections, so that the coverage of Netsuke is more complete than that of any other book previously published on the subject. He surveys 1,300 representative pieces in two main sections; in the first section the signed Netsuke are dealt with, divided into different schools; in the second section the unsigned and unattributable Netsuke are categorized by subject matter. Both are fully illustrated with over 1,200 and some illustrations of the artist's actual signatures. Full details of artists, schools and subjects are given. The introduction describes the general background of Netsuke and comments on materials, techniques and terminology. The book includes a glossary of Japanese terms, and an index of all known Netsuke artists, with facts about the type of work for which they are recognized and their names in Japanese characters, where the artist is known.; Reviews of the First Edition: "Such a comprehensive work with every item illustrated, some with signature details as well, will make this a standard reference for many years to came". Museums Journal.; "Mr Davey's book is more than an ordinary art book: it is a rich source of information and will be used by Netsuke collectors as an encyclopedia." Times Literary Supplement.; "The serious collector will find this volume a welcome addition to his library." Antiques Monthly.…

Very good condition overall.; Since its publication in 1974, this book has established itself as a standard reference work for collectors or netsuke. 1300 representative pieces from one of the most comprehensive collections ever to have been formed are discussed and ilustrated, including full details of artists, schools and subjects. In this new, revised edition over 100 more photographs of artists' signatures have been added, bringing the total number to over 300, and greatly increasing the book's value for the collector. Each new signature had been carefully chosen from a large section to ensure its authenticity. In addition, 182 of the pieces are now illustrated in full colour. The bibliography has been expanded to include all the major new books published in the intervening years.; Reviews of the First Edition: "Such a comprehensive work with every item illustrated, some with signature details as well, will make this a standard reference for many years to came". Some pages show signs of have been bent at the bottom. Remaining interior with minor signs of wear. Good readable/working copy.; The book is protected with a clearcover, the clearcover is damaged, with some chips and tears throughout.; "George Lazarnick, produced a detailed study on the signatures of netsuke and inro artists, together with easily followed guidelines on how they may be read as well as illustrated notes on the calligraphic construction of the numerous Japanese characters involved. Over a period of several years, in addition to forming a collection of fine netsuke, Mr. Lazarnick has been amassing much detailed information on their carvers, searching out fine examples of their work throughout the world and recording the signatures in a systematic fashion. He has been aided in this work by his own natural gift for photography which, together with a large amount of painstaking research and help from other collectors and Oriental art dealers, has gone towards the production of this book. As George Lazarnick mentions in his introduction, one of the most difficult and brain-taxing aspects of reading and interpreting signatures is that the carved or engraved calligraphy used by the artists does not always follow the strict kanji or printed form of the characters represented. It is in this particular area that Mr. Lazarnick provides us with a wealth of useful information, together with many clear photographs of actual signatures. The majority of these have been enlarged so that the scholar may interpret the quirks and calligraphic mannerisms used by the artists in question with greater ease. As Mr. Lazarnick points out this is not another netsuke and inro book as such. He does not delve deeply into the biographies or artists, the styles of carving that they employed, or the materials that they used. He wisely feels that most of these aspects of the field have been covered and that he would shine a new light, from a different angle on this fascinating subject." excerpt from the foreword by Neil K. Davey, London, 1976.…
