Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The studies in this volume present some of the major historiographical wars over the medieval Balkan past fought by the historians of competing nation states in the region. thnic origins and national makeup of medieval states and disputed regions; ownership of the historical heritage located in or associated with that territory; provenance or national consciousness of important historical personalities; the boundaries of a certain medieval state and its political, religious, and cultural influence on others these are some of the issues around which major clashes between the modern Balkan historiographies recurred. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The book is comprised of the four major debates on modern Bulgarian history from Independence in 1878 to the fall of communism in 1989. The debates are on the Bulgarian-Russian/Soviet relations, on the relations between Agrarians and Communists, on Bulgarian Fascism, and on Communism. They are associated with the rule of key political personalities in Bulgarian history: Stambolov (1887-1894), Stamboliiski (1919-1923), Tsar Boris III (1918-1943), and the communist leaders Georgi Dimitrov and Todor Zhivkov (1956-1989). The debates are traced through their various articulations and dramatic turns from their beginnings to the present day. …

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume offers a history of historiography, as Roumen Daskalov presents a critical analysis of Bulgarian historiographical views of the Middle Ages to reveal their embeddedness in their historical context and their adaptation to the contemporary circumstances. The study traces the establishment of a master narrative of the Bulgarian Middle Ages and its evolution over time to the present day, including the attempt at a Marxist counter-narrative. Daskalov uses categories of master national narratives, which typically are stories of origins and migrations, state foundations and rises ('golden ages'), and decline and fall, yet they also assert the continuity of the 'people', present certain historical personalities (good or evil, 'great' or 'weak'), and describe certain actions or passivity to others' actions.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Modern Balkan history has traditionally been studied by national historians in terms of separate national histories taking place within bounded state territories. The authors in this volume take a different approach. They all seek to treat the modern history of the region from a transnational and relational perspective in terms of shared and connected, as well as entangled, histories, transfers and crossings. This goes along with an interest in the way ideas, institutions and techniques were selected, transferred and adapted to Balkan conditions and how they interacted with those conditions, resulting in mélanges and hybridization. The volume also invites reflection on the interacting entities in the very process of their creation and consecutive transformations rather than taking them as givens. Contributors include: Diana Mishkova, Alexander Vezenkov, Constantin Iordachi, Roumen Daskalov, Tchavdar Marinov, Blagovest Njagulov.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Modern Balkan history has traditionally been studied by national historians in terms of separate national histories taking place within bounded state territories. The authors in this volume take a different approach. They view the modern history of the region from a transnational and relational perspective in terms of shared and connected, as well as entangled histories. This regards the treatment of shared historical legacies by rival national historiographies. The volume deals with historiograpical disputes that arose in the process of 'nationalizing' the past. Contributors include: Diana Mishkova, Alexander Vezenkov, Roumen Daskalov, Tchavdar Marinov and Bernard Lory.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The present volume is the last in the Entangled Balkans series and marks the end of several years of research guided by the transnational, 'entangled history' and histoire croisée approaches. The essays in this volume address theoretical and methodological issues of Balkan or Southeast European regional studies--not only questions of scholarly concepts, definitions, and approaches but also the extra-scholarly, ideological, political, and geopolitical motivations that underpin them. These issues are treated more systematically and by a presentation of their historical evolution in various national traditions and schools. Some of the essays deal with the articulation of certain forms of 'Balkan heritage' in relation to the geographical spread and especially the cultural definition of the 'Balkan area.' Concepts and definitions of the Balkans are thus complemented by (self-)representations that reflect on their cultural foundations.…
