The present work embodies the result of more than ten years floristic and utility of plant resources survey of one of the remote areas of the Eastern Ghats region comprising four districts of Orissa viz Rayagada Koraput Nowrangpur and Malkangiri. The Koraput region is rich in plant wealth and for long time this area was under explored. The study covers an area of 26 921sq km and the total number of species described are 582 (324 genera and 100 families) that includes several rare/endangered and endemic taxa along with 19 photographs and 16 line diagrams. Keys to the families genera and species (based on modified Bentham and Hooker's System) have been provided to help identification. Systematic enumeration includes species nomenclature diagnostic description and local names. Phytogeographically the area is most interesting as its floristic composition represents an admixture of the northern tropical and temperate elements with those of the Deccan elements and a meeting ground of southern and northern type of forests. The book will be useful to teachers scholars and students of botany agriculture and forestry and to plant lovers and such others. 394 pp.

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 624 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The global food security and sustainable agriculture are the key challenges before the scientific community in the present era of enhanced climate variability, rapidly rising population and dwindling resources. No part of the world is immune from meteorological extremes of one sort or another posing threat to the food security. Agrometeorology has to make most efficient use of the opportunities available in achieving the objectives of enhancing productivity and maintenance of sustainability. Increased awareness and technological advancement have provided opportunities to develop efficient agrometeorological services that can help cope with risks. These include improvements in weather forecasting, better understanding of the monsoon variability and crop-weather relationships, advances in operational agrometeorology and agrometeorological information systems, adaptation strategies to climate change and improved risk evaluation and management. This book based on an International Workshop held in New Delhi, India should be of interest to all organizations and agencies interested in agrometeorological applications.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. India, a mega diverse country has also a high degree of endemism owing to diverse climatic conditions and varied topography. The study of endemism helps in identifying region with high biodiversity and can be a means of useful factor for the conservation of species. Further, it is reported that the terrestrial endemics are projected to be affected 10 times more than the non endemic species due to climate change. Therefore, an enumeration of endemics can help not only in identifying and conserving them but also the biodiversity at large. The variation in climatic conditions across the state of West Bengal has complemented to a spectacular floral diversity. A number of endemic species are known to occur in the state including several new taxa described in the recent decades. Due to their restricted range of occurrence, endemic species are often the most vulnerable. The flora of West Bengal has been under severe pressure due to various biotic and abiotic factors leading to depletion of huge tracts of natural vegetation. As a result, many species of vascular plants have become rare and threatened. So far, the state of our knowledge on the endemic and threatened vascular plants occurring in West Bengal has remained scattered. The present book attempts to reflect the current knowledge on Endemic and Threatened vascular plants of West Bengal by scrutinising the literature, herbarium information and field data. The book provides a detailed account on the Endemic and Threatened vascular plants of West Bengal with detailed descriptions, distribution and phenology along with distributional maps and photographs. A total of 52 species of vascular plants belonging to 46 genera and 29 families are recorded as endemics and 58 taxa belonging to 48 genera and 32 families of vascular plants are documented as threatened species. The information provided in the book will significantly contribute in the conservation and management of endemic and threatened vascular plants of West Bengal.

They control the hydrological cycle of local environment and provide various ecosystem services tot the local inhabitants. The wetlands of international importance are designated as Ramsar Sites. In India, 75 wetlands are designated as Ramsar Sites covering 0.4% of country s geographical area. These 75 Ramsar sites are from various phytogeographic regions from the high altitude Himalayan Mountains to the Gangetic Palins and Peninsular India. They are either manmade or natural wetlands and support wide array of flora and fauna in and around the water bodies. The books Compendium on Phytodiversity of Ramsar Sites in India in two volumes contains the result of rapid floristic assessment conducted by Botanical Survey of India in these 75 Ramsar Sites. A staggering 4126 species of plants were documented in two volumes with more than 3226 taxa of flowering plants alone. Photographs of important species are included which would help in identification of species. These enormous plant diversity also includes many economically important and medicinally important species along with some threatened and endemic species. Conservation of these floristic elements is the key to the sustainable management of these vulnerable ecosystems.
