Binding is tight. Marbled edges in good condition. No date, but circa 1801 as plates are dated 1801. Part I deals with angling. Full gilt stamped a…nd decorated leather over boards, marbled end papers, [2], 378 pages, 15 plates (which includes the title page) with tissues, some fold-out, one extra folding plate "Trench at Thornwood" which is actually listed as being in Part II, Volume II. Text body is free of writing or marks. Corners and spine ends are bumped with some wear, rebacked spine with original spine reattached, reattached original spine leather is chipped and a large piece at bottom of spine missing, top layer of leather on spine detaching, gilt on spine faded, leather scuffed and worn, foxing to tissues guards and facing pages and plates (rest of text has only minor foxing), tissue guards missing on one plate and torn on another. Part II includes a continuation of angling, then moves into bird hunting, dogs used in shooting, and finally ammunition & guns. Full gilt stamped and decorated leather over boards, marbled end papers, [4], 356 pages, 29 plates (some with tissues), some fold-out, Index. This copy lists the aforementioned plate "Trench at Thornwood" in the List of Plates, but it is actually in Part I. Corners and spine ends are bumped with some wear, spine rebacked with original spine reattached and with piece missing near head of spine and partially affecting the title, leather scuffed and worn, previous owner's signature and address in pencil on front free end paper as well as a stamped name on front free end paper, foxing to varying degrees throughout, tissue guards missing on some plates and torn/worn on others, previous owner has made pencil corrections to the pagination on the List of Plates, and has annotated the Index, and has drawn vertical pencil lines next to some paragraphs. Contemporary tan calf, gilt and b…lind (rebacked in brown morocco to style). Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplates of Robert Townley Parker dated 1850; Myles C. Radford; and H. Barnard-Hankey on the front paste-down of each volume. First published in 1801. A manuscript note tipped-in to the front endpapers of volume II states: "The Pointers belong to Sir Larkin, to whom the Compiler is extremely obliged, for the loan of a very excellent Picture, by Sir Chalon, from which the plate was taken". The plate appears opposite page 440 in volume II. Daniel's "notoriety stemmed principally from his authorship of Rural Sports, published in 1801. Proving very popular among contemporary sportsmen and even naturalists, the volumes describe in detail hunting, coursing, and fishing and contain many impressive plates interspersed with occasional references to Daniel's own exploits. They were reissued as a three-volume set in 1812, with a supplementary fourth volume, dedicated to the marquess of Blandford, published in 1813. The latter, though written in a more careless style, contained a miscellany of anecdotes and receipts. Rural Sports provided the basis of many more modern texts and constitutes an early historical record of shooting before the introduction of the revolutionary breach-loading guns in the mid-nineteenth century. The significance of Daniel's text was still being eulogized as late as 1886 on the grounds that it contained: one of the earliest, if not the earliest authentic accounts of wild-fowl shooting with punt and gun, beside many incidents connected with fowling, that are of great interest as records of the sport of catching and shooting ducks in past days. Complete in all respects with 72 colored plates, 2 uncolored, and 5 plates in the Supplement volume. Additonally there are a further 22 "extra" fine engravings by John Scott (21 of which are proofs before letters), and 6 rare aquatints by Thomas Medford. Tall, strong and handsome, very little wear at all save for some minor scuffing and rubbing to extremities, Vol IV, (the Supplement) has some sunning and staining to the front board, mild darkening to the spines, gilt bright; internally clean and fresh, plain green endpapers, leather bookplate to front pastedown, top edges gilt, all others untrimmed, large margins, some very occasional spotting and thumbing. A near fine, sumptuously bound, extra-illustrated set of a significantly influential piece of early 19th century sporting literature. First published in two rather meagre volumes in 1801 to considerable approval, before being greatly expanded for this 1805 edition (widely described in bibliographic circles as the "Best" edition), with the supplemental volume being published in 1813. The supplement contains an 8pp. Subscriber's list to the front. The bookplate is that of Alfred Barmore Maclay, a leading light in US equestrian circles, and a wealthy and avid collector of books on sporting in general, and horses in particular. Vol I is a general treatise on hunting, Vol II is entirely concerned with fishing and angling, with Vol II covering the realm of Fowling, the supplemental volume contains much general observation on the breeding of dogs and other animals. A mammoth exploit on the part of Rev. Daniel, attempting very much to be for the wider world of hunting what Izaak Walton's Compleat Angler was to fishing, containing every possible shred of information from best practices to the geography of British hunting, and a wealth of anecdotal information for the enthusiast. Laid in at the front is a catalog description from Ernest R. Gee (the pre-eminent mid-century US dealer in sporting works) describing the finer points of the work, describing it as "excessively rare", and with Gee's initialled collation marks to the prelims. A splendid copy of an already desirable work.
