Including his Epitome scientiae naturalis ( first published in 1618), De Consensu & Dissensu Chymicorum cum Galenicis, De Origine Animarum in Brutis and his Hypomnemata physicae (first published in 1636) Sennert is not…able for his contributions to the development of an early version of atomic theory. Specifically, he forms an intermediate bridge between the works of Geber and the more recognized Corpuscularianists such as Robert Boyle. Corpuscularianism differs from modern atomic theory in a number of significant ways, most noticeably a lack of a mathematical argument for its existence, something Sennert specifically rejected. Sennert is a intermediate step between corpsucular particle theory and Aristotelian forms. The same works that are often sited as demonstrating his early atomist views also emphasize the importance of substantial forms. Sennert"s theories were based on an experiential and experimental evidence that he gathered both from eyewitness accounts and his own laboratory experience. One of Sennert"s most notable experiments was a variation on the "reduction to the pristine state." Taking an alloy of gold and silver, the silver was dissolved from the alloy in aqua fortis. In the classic "reduction to the pristine state," the silver was then precipitated out of the aqua fortis by the addition of salt of tartar and then heated in a crucible to return it to its recognizable metallic form. Sennert"s innovation on this experiment was the addition of pouring the silver-aqua fortis solution through a paper filter before precipitating the silver from the solution. This experiment was used as evidence that the silver remained in the mixture in the form of minuscule particles, rather than dissolving into its Aristotelian components. It appears to have inspired similar experiments on the part of Richard Boyle and others used to establish acceptance of Corpuscularianism. With decorative head-and-tailpieces, and vignette red-and-black title pages. Frontispiece engraving of the author to volume I is missing. Complete in three volumes. Rebound in half-morocco (volume I) and cloth (volumes II and III). Externally, generally smart, though with some light rubbing and a few marks. Splitting to cloth on rear joint of volume III, and board is partially detached, with some tears to rear endpapers. Front hinge of volume II slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Some pages have been expertly repaired. Institutional ink stamps of Birmingham General Hospital Library to title pages and throughout text. Title page of volume III is missing. Some mould to the first few pages of volume II. Pages have some tidemarks and some scattered spotting, with handling marks to the title pages, but are quite bright, given the age of the text. Good. L'édition originale ce grand traité a paru à Witt…enberg chez les héritiers de Zacharias Schürer en 1628-1635. Ce volume contient les travaux de Sennert sur les "maladies cachées", soit celles induites par les poisons, la contagion, la sorcellerie, ainsi que les maladies vénériennes. Daniel Sennert (1572-1637), né à Breslau en Pologne, est l'un des plus célèbres médecins érudits du XVIIe siècle. Il occupa la chaire de médecine à l'Université de Wittemberg pendant 35 ans. Il a tenté d'unir pour la première fois les principes d'Aristote, de Galien, de Paracelse et des atomistes. Ce défenseur de la pathologie humorale de Galien était fortement ancré dans les anciennes traditions de la pensée médicale (Heirs of Hippocrates). Il fut par ailleurs le premier à donner une description scientifique de la scarlatine, il enrichit les connaissances sur le scorbut, la dysenterie et l'alcoolisme. C'était un clinicien compétent, mais aussi un médecin spagyrique, adepte de la sorcellerie. Ex-libris ancien manuscrit sur la page de titre. Étiquette au monogramme N. H. (Nicole Hebecourt). Die Abhandlung über die Fieber behandelt in ihrem letzten Teil ausführlich die epidemischen Krankheiten ("De peste pestilentibusque ac malignis febribus") mit einem angehängten "Fasciculus medicamentorum pestilentia grassante". Der Wittenberger Mediziner Daniel Sennert war Vertreter der iatrochemischen Richtung.
