Training noncommissioned officers was conducted by officers in the regiment and was the commanding officer's responsibility. It was accepted that unit training was the best means of developing noncommissioned officers and potential noncommissioned officers. It was not until the post-World War II era that NCO training was conducted outside the unit at specially designed schools and academies. The first Sergeant Major of the Army, William O. Wooldridge, noted that in those days a soldier had to provide for his own education and training. 'I went to night school. There were no requirements to attend school if you didn't want to. Now you must get training, or you don't get promoted.'.

Tilley, the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army, it is a series of leadership lessons based on selected stories from his more than 35-year career. The last Vietnam veteran to serve in that position from 2000-2004, SMA Tilley was at the Pentagon when terrorists crashed a plane into the nation's largest 'office building' on September 11, 2001. He and his co-author, Dan Elder weave a story beginning with Tilley's enlistment into the United States Army in the summer of 1966, his deployment to Vietnam, his ascension to positions of great responsibility, and describe influential events leading up to his eventual selection and assignment as the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army. He apologises for not writing sooner and discusses a book he has sent, firstly the binding, then the content in which the lives and deaths of the debauched Callistus and the virtuous Sophronius are contrasted, illustrated with a quotation from Young's "Night Thoughts".[viz. the scarce [Mulso, Thomas]. "Callistus: or, the man of fashion. And Sophronius: or, the country gentleman". In three dialogues. Dublin: printed by John Exshaw, 1769 - presumably he sees himself as the contented country gentleman - see Note below]. He reports with eulogy the death of his grandfather [part of the evidence for the identification of Daniel - Gent. Mag. in article on Samuel Rogers family (1856), says that his grandfather "appears" to have died in 1775]. He hopes to see Bromley in London and encourages a prompt reply. He then adds an original poem: "The following piece of Poetry, (on this charming season) the first I ever attempted in this kind of verse I submit to your impartial judgment. | On the Spring. || 1. | Far to the North dread winter flies, | And fragrant flowers meet our eyes | And woods arrayed in Green, | While th'airy warblers melting tale, | Melodious echo's [sic] thro' the vale, | And num'rous flocks are seen | [. . .]" Two further stanzas )also AABCCB, follow. Note: Daniel, elder brother of Samuel Rogers, went to Cambridge, trained as a barrister but "settled down in the country as a married man of strong literary tastes and no literary ambition." ["Samuel Rogers and His Circle"] When at Cambridge, his fellow student, Egerton Brydges, commented that he "never saw one of his compositions" . He became a "great reader" and student of Eastern languages ["Early Life of Samuel Rogers"]. This letter provides evidence that at least when young he had literary ambition. I have traced no other surviving MS material in his hand.

(Staatliche Museen; Lugt 2398).Biography engraver: Daniel Hopfer (1471-1536) was the son of the painter Bartholomäus Hopfer of Kaufbeuren in Swabia, Daniel became a citizen of Augsburg in 1493 and is recorded as a master painter in the same year. Worked as an armourer in Augsburg. He was the earliest artist to adapt the practice of etching on iron to printmaking and to make a significant profession out of it. He produced 145 etchings and his sons, Hieronymus (c.1500-63) and Lambert (active c. 1525-50), continued the family reputation as etchers for a generation in Augsburg and Nuremberg. Daniel also designed a few woodcuts, chiefly ornamental borders for book illustrations (Hollstein, 146-155). In 1524 the Emperor Charles V conferred on Hopfer a coat of arms for his "true accomplishments in the service of the Emperor and Empire" (Eyssen, p. 37).
