L'originalité de l'approche est de s'inspirer fortement du programme d'Erlangen de Felix Klein. On insiste plus sur les structures algébriques qui caractérisent chaque géométrie que sur les objets géométriques eux-mêmes. Ainsi le fil conducteur est le groupe des isométries, qui permet de passer d'une vision géométrique à une autre (comme de la géométrie sphérique à la géométrie hyperbolique).
