In a contemporary leather binding. Externally, generally sound but with some wear to extremities, evidence of past worming, rubbing and marks to boards. One spine label absent, loss to other. Hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Bright but with occasional scattered spots and handling marks. With some tidemarks, mostly to endpapers, and a slight closed tear to front free endpaper, which is attached to front pastedown. Good Only. book.

O início do dicionário, na página um é ilustrado por um belo cabeção com o retrato do Delfim, com o seu brasão de armas e rodeado pelas nove musas, desenhado por L. B. Scotin le Jeune. Todas as letras do alfabeto são decoradas e são de maiores dimensões. Exemplar com falta da folha de anterrosto, com rasgão restaurado por reforço colado no verso; com mancha desvanecida junto ao festo e à cabeça das páginas iniciais e finais e com algum foxing. Rara edição deste notável dicionário, que foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1673, depois mais alargado em 1691. A presente edição será a 10ª edição. O dicionário de Pierre Danet foi reeditado e aperfeiçoado muitas vezes e serviu de base a outros dicionários publicados em diversos países europeus. O Delfim de França a quem a obra foi dedicada é Luís Fernando (Versalhes 1729 - Fontainebleau 1765) filho do rei Luís XV e pai do Rei Luís XVI. Ficou conhecido por prestar grande atenção à educação dos seus filhos e filhas e por ser um defensor do catolicismo e da autoridade real. Desaprovou a expulsão dos jesuítas, em 1764, foi devoto e promotor da devoção ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus e um oponente da Enciclopédia e dos filósofos. Pierre Danet (1650 - Paris 1709) clérigo francês, linguista, latinista, helenista e lexicógrafo. Em 1668 integrou a equipa de editores dos livros para uso do Delfim, por nomeação do Duque de Montausier, tutor do anterior Delfim, filho de Luís XIV. Foi admitido na Academia Francesa, em 1673 e tornou-se Abade de S. Nicolau em Verdun desde 1677. Publicou dicionários de latim francês e de francês latim, um dicionário das raízes das palavras latinas, em 1677 e um dicionário de antiguidades greco-latinas, em 1701. Clear printing with the use of small round and italic characters, with the text arranged in two columns separated by single fillet, except for the preliminary leaves, which are in continuous text. The title page printed in black and red is decorated with printer's device with the motto: Harmonia Surgunt, designed by Papillon. The dedication to the Dauphin printed in large italic characters is adorned with a fine allegorical headpiece and a capital that include the coat of arms of the honoree. The preface is adorned with a fine decorative headpiece (which is repeated at the beginning of the catalogue of Latin writers) and a decorated initial; the notice to readers printed in italics and the aforementioned catalogue are adorned with finishing fleurons . The beginning of the dictionary, on page one is illustrated by a beautiful headpiece with the portrait of the Dauphin, with his coat of arms and surrounded by the nine muses, drawn by L. B. Scotin le Jeune. All the letters of the alphabet are decorated and are of larger in size. Copy missing half title page, with tear on title page restored by reinforcement pasted on verso; with faded stain near inner hinge and head of initial and final pages and with some foxing. Rare edition of this remarkable dictionary, which was first published in 1673, then further expanded in 1691. The present edition will be the 10th edition. Pierre Danet's dictionary was reprinted and improved many times and served as a basis for other dictionaries published in various European countries. The Dauphin of France to whom the work was dedicated is Louis Ferdinand (Versailles 1729 - Fontainebleau 1765) son of King Louis XV and father of King Louis XVI. He was known for paying great attention to the education of his sons and daughters and for being a defender of Catholicism and royal authority. He disapproved of the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1764, was a devotee and promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and an opponent of the Encyclopaedia and philosophers.
