In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. `An Indiscretion in the Life of a Heiress', is one of ten stories - three collaborative, all uncollected - that are brought together in this volume. `Indiscretion', derived from Hardy's unpublished first novel The Poor Man and the Lady , represents one of his earliest confrontations with the class and gender issues which were to remain central to his fiction throughout his life. Several of the other stories, notably `Destiny and a Blue Cloak', `The Spectre of the Real', and `The Unconquerable', raise similar questions, while at the same time illustrating, in typical Hardyan fashion, life's little (or somewhat larger) ironies. Some of the other stories are less characteristic: `Old Mrs Chuncle', for example, approximates moral fable more closely than is usual for Hardy, while `Our Exploits at West Poley' is anomalous not only in being (like `The Thieves Who Couldn't Help Sneezing') a story written for children but also in experimenting with unreliable narration. Such stories are signifcant precisley because they incoporate varieties of technique, subject matter, and genre that are otherwise found in the Hardy canon either rarely or not at all. This book is intended for students of 19th century English literature at all levels. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Good. When Elfrise Swanston meets Stephen Smith she is attracted to his handsome face, gentle bearing and the sense of mystery which surrounds him. Although distressed to find that the mystery consists only in the humbleness of his origins, she remains true to their youthful vows. But societal pressures, and the advent of the superior Henry Knight, eventually displace her affections. Knight, however, proves to be an uncompromising moralist who, obsessed with fears about Elfride's sexual past, destroys her happiness. Writing of the struggle between classes and sexes, Hardy drew heavily on his own relationships, and in the introduction, Pamela Dalziel discovers fascinating parallels between Hardy's life and his art. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
