Externally, smart with minimal marks. Slight bumping to head and tail of the spine, with slight shelf wear to extremities and joins. End papers are bright and clean. Internally, generally firmly bound, tender between leaves pp.161-177 and leaves pp.177-191. Pages are generally bright and clean, with spotting to title leaf and frontispiece. Rather than simply being a book to teach, it aims to engage readers with the sea shores by looking at the fascinating creatures which help make it. Finished only two years after Darwin's Natural Selection, Fraser subtly avoids delving into the evolutionary debate.In its third edition, the book later became the more popular 'The Seaside Naturalist', with revisions and more illustrations.
