Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. An album of late 19th century dance sheet music. Folio. Around 120 to 150 pages. Quarter black leather cloth covered boards, leather spine with raised bands tooled with gilt in six compartments with "Dances" in gilt at the top of the spine, the initials "N.L.D" in gilt on the front board, and blue endpapers. Worn boards and spine with the foot of the spine coming loose, both the front and rear hinge have been repaired, some loss of the front fly leaf, toned endpapers, and a few tears throughout but there is no loss of the sheet music which remains bright and clean, a few with an owner name or music shop stamp on the front cover, and one song may possibly have the wrong cover ("Lachtaubchen: La Rieuse"), overall very good. The album consists of 30 instrumental dance pieces for the piano, many being schottisches and lancers. The collection includes many seemingly uncommon to rare pieces which are either unrecorded by *OCLC* or located in very small numbers, and almost every piece is bound with its original front cover (some include rear covers featuring ads as well). Highlights include: "Possum Dance" (with engraved illustration of dancing possums on the front cover) by S. Bourgoin, published by J. Van Loan & Co., copyright 1982, unrecorded by *OCLC*. "New York Society Lancers" (dedicated to The Ladies of New York) by J.S. Cox, published by J. Van Loan & Co., copyright 1889, unrecorded by *OCLC*. "Dance Music from Mikado" (with an elaborately engraved illustration on the front cover) by George Wiegand, published by Wm. A. Pond & Co., copyright 1883, two in *OCLC* (a closed tear partially affecting the music though it remains complete). "Hot Time in the Old Town Schottische" (with a bold and colorful front cover illustration) by Theo. A. Metz, published by Willis, Woodward & Co., copyright 1897, three of the schottische in *OCLC*. "Society Yorke (As Danced in New York Society)" by W. Vincent Daly, published by J. Van-Loan & Co., copyright 1890, unrecorded by *OCLC*. And what appears to be an early edition of "Künstler-Quadrille" by Johann Strauss (with dampstaining along the top throughout), published by Carl Haslinger, no printed copyright, the text is in German so it's difficult to make out if this is the exact piece by Strauss or an interpretation of his work. The album also includes multiple pieces by the composers George Wiegand and Emil Waldteufel. A lovely collection of uncommon to rare late 19th century dance music. A complete list of titles is available upon request.
