These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. Observed by Sir James Dalrymple of Stair, Knight and Baronet, &c. Edinburgh, printed by the heir of Andrew Anderson, Printer to His most Sacred Majesty, Anno Dom. 1683. Hardcover, 769 pages plus an index. Bound in full leather, with five raised cords and two leather, gilt stamped labels on the spine. The leather is embossed around the edges of the boards. The hinge of the front cover has split and the board is loose. With a plate on the front attached endpaper which reads "No. 66. T.R. Gillies, Advocated, Aberdeen." There is a more contemporary bookplate on the facing page from the previous owner Robert Maxtone Graham. Text block is strong; a very nice copy. The hinge at the front cover is torn and the spine piece is loose at the bottom and right sides. Front board is loose. There are several white smudges on the boards. This volume also has a bookplate from the previous owner Graham, as well as an auction description glued to the front attached endpaper. "301" is written below in pencil. There is a signature in faded brown ink on the title page; I think the name is Jo Goldie, but it's difficult to read. For all volumes, the crown & foot of the spines and the edges and corners of the boards have some wear, including bumping and light chipping. Leather is lightly worn, including shallow creases on the spine and rubbing. The pages have rippled somewhat and evenly toned with age. The endpapers are especially toned around the outside edges. Some notes are written in faded ink on the pages and margins. There are also a few fingerprints, smudges, and minor creases to some of the pages. …

Zustand: Very good. Etching; 320 x 360 mm., mounted. The original eighteenth century version of this rare transportation engraving, where the Parliament of Great Britain is depicted as having been condemned - the chair of the Speaker being inscribed "This House adjourned to Botany Bay". This is an example of the rare, original printing with both the date and the publishing details scratched through in ink. A later version was issued in the 1850s. Stephens in his great catalogue of the British Museum's print collection shows that this is the first of a series of four political satires by Gillray after Dalrymple, and one of a pair depicting government (the other two have agricultural settings). Showing a mad scene in the House of Commons, this is sub-titled "No. 1 Plate 1st. We come to recover your long lost Liberties.". The second such print, more frequently seen, is set in the House of Lords and is sub-titled "No. 1 Plate 2d. We explain the Rights of Man to the Noblesse.". This rare Gillray cartoon takes a satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay, in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed, the statutes discarded on the floor, and above the Speaker's chair are the words, "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay - sine die". Although recorded and reproduced by Jonathan King in The Other Side of the Coin, we have not found this first issue of 1798 listed in standard Australian catalogues. .…
