This impressively illustrated collection was first published in 1762, showcasing principal English artists, with a focus on painting. It is often considered to be the first comprehensive biographical study of the history of the arts in England. Walpole presents the lives and work of various prominent artists from different periods, including during the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Charles I, Charles II, George I and George II. Volume V serves as a catalogue of engravers who were born or resided in England during these periods. Wonderfully illustrated, with 88 illustrations on 80 plates, and 39 engravings.
