Among others, Dr. Berkenbosch, played an important role in this research group, which made a large and significant contribution to scientific research on the regulation of breathing. This book presents the proceedings of that meeting together with papers of several authors who have strong bonds with the Leiden Departments of Physiology and Anesthesiology. All studies represent state of the art work on the subject of respiratory control and cardiovascular medicine, with emphasis on the physiological, pharmacological and anesthesiological aspects of both fields. The book is divided in several sections: Oxygen Physiology. Prof. John Severinghaus presents among other things his ideas on oxygen sensing and high altitude related diseases. Prof. Honda gives results from studies in a unique set of subjects without carotid bodies. The findings of Honda's group support the idea that an intact hypoxic drive from the carotid bodies is necessary for the generation of central hypoxic depression. Dr. Hans van Beek discusses the effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia on cardiac contractility in animal models. Prof. Oeseburg demonstrates the feasibility of Near Infra Red Oximetry for monitoring tissue oxygenation in patients. Central Chemoreception.

Les etudes rassemblees ici montrent que cette reflexion critique a bien eu lieu durant tout le Moyen Age et qu?elle s?est exercee dans les domaines de la critique textuelle, de la critique des faits, de la critique d?authenticite et de la critique doctrinale. Si la critique historique se montre parfois hesitante, on sera peut-etre surpris de constater que c?est dans le champ du religieux que l?esprit critique s?exerce le plus intensement et le plus rigoureusement, qu?il s?agisse de l?etablissement du texte de la Bible, du rejet de certaines superstitions ou de la mise a l?epreuve de toutes les theses de la theologie, y compris des plus fondamentales. Deux contributions portant sur le XVIe siecle, considere comme le debut de l?esprit critique, montrent que le moyen age soutient bien la comparaison. Il a en effet brillamment illustre les trois volets de l'enseignement des sciences sacrees, tels que les definit Pierre le Chantre, lire, disputer, precher. Lire, c'est etudier l'Ecriture sainte; Etienne Langton a commente la quasi-totalite des livres bibliques, en sachant a la fois recueillir toute la tradition qui le precede et ouvrir des voies nouvelles: le point est fait ici sur son hermeneutique et sur ses methodes d'exegese, avec des etudes sur des livres bibliques precis, mais aussi sur son commentaire d'un texte majeur de la generation precedente, l'Histoire scolastique de Pierre le Mangeur. Disputer, c'est discuter des themes doctrinaux; il s'agit d'un travail theologique, avant meme que la theologie ne soit definie comme une science a part entiere et Etienne Langton illustre les genres principaux de la ? somme ? et de la ? question? , en mettant au service de ses analyses ses competences particulieres en matiere de sciences du langage. Enfin, Etienne Langton a laisse un nombre impressionnant de sermons, dont la richesse thematique est grande et qui fournissent egalement des elements precieux sur l'etat de l'Eglise. A la charniere du XIIe et du XIIIe siecle, Etienne Langton pose les bases de ce que sera la culture universitaire du XIIIe siecle et apparait ainsi comme un auteur a la fois important et attachant.
