PRESENTATION COPY with an initialed holograph inscription from Michel Eugéne Chevreul (1786-1889), the famous French chemist, president of the Institut Royal de France and l'Académie de Sciences, to J. B. J. d'Omalius d'Halloy (1783-1875), the Belgian geologist (see D.S.B. 10: 208-210), who was a foreign member of the French l'Académie des Sciences. Partial fraying of the backstrip paper, lacking original thread that held the signatures together; a good to very good large copy. Little known and among the earliest notices of Daguerre's new sensational advance in photography is Lermercier's (the French dramatist and poet) long poem, 'Lampélie et Daguerre', on the subject presented as a lecture before the Institut at the beginning of May, 1839. Here it is published with a short introductory essay on pages 21 through 37. Spine with red morocco labels with gilt title. = First edition of several important papers following the first public announcement of the basic process of photography by Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851). The pronouncements on Daguerre's invention were made in 1839 by the French physicist and astronomer Dominique François Jean Arago (1786-1851) and mark the beginning of the triumphant process of photography. The first communication by Arago in this volume deals with the announcement by Daguerre that he had been able to produce good images with a shutter speed of just 1 to 2 seconds, whereas in 1839 the exposure time was counted in minutes. We offer the complete volume 12, which, as indicated in the index, contains no less than twenty papers on photography. The paper offered here preceeded the official report in Comptes Rendues which was published at the end of 1839 (in the July-December issue). The first report of on the discovery was presented to the Royal Academy on January 7, 1839 and delivered in full on August 19, 1839 (and printed in the July-Dec. issue of Comptes Rendues). The paper also preceeded Daguerre's own publication of 1839 "Historique et description du daguerréotypie."In 1839 Arago took a personal interest in announcing and popularizing the inventions of Niepce and Daguerre, who were awarded government pensions as a result of Arago?s recognition of their inventions? potential significance."In 1829 Daguerre went into partnership with Niepce, who had managed to produce images by the action of light some three years earlier but had failed to make the process really practical. Daguerre carried on and began to use copper plates on which silver salts were deposited. ight was made to focus upon that and an image was formed. The light portions of the image darkened the salts, while the shadowy portions left them unaffected. The unchanged salt was dissolved away by sodium thiosulfate (a process that had been suggested by John Herschel and a permanent image of sorts was left behind."(Asimov).…
