Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. 1st Edition - Louisiana State Univ (1944). VERY GOOD in a fair dust jacket the is protected in Mylar. No marks in text. Binding it tight and square. xii, 552 pages 24 cm. . . . . . . . . FROM THE FRONT COVER OF THE DUST JACKET: One Hundred Great Years is the history of one of the oldest and most influential of American newspapers into which is woven a colorful picture of life in New Orleans and Louisiana -- of Creole customs, of the bustle and activity in the great port of the South, and of the growth and economic development of a Region. Begun as the first *penny* newspaper in the South, the Daily Picayune, forerunner of the present Times-Picayune, won national distinction with its coverage of the Mexican War, a prestige which it has maintained throughout its existence. The files of the Picayune contain many interesting sidelights of history as recorded day by day by its staff of brilliant reporters. Thomas Ewing Dabney, a veteran member of the editorial staff of the New Orleans States, has carefully gone through these files and has written the most fascinating true story of Louisiana ever presented in one volume.

In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION. Warmly inscribed by Conrad Hilton to ffep, plausibly to Elaine Stritch: "To Elaine / Take a little trip to New Mexico the Southwest and back to New York ? Connie / New York Dec. 9, 1951." A biography of Conrad Hilton, the founder of the Hilton hotel empire, centred around his 1949 purchase of a controlling interest in the Waldorf-Astoria, referred to by Hilton as "the greatest of them all". A tenable recipient is actress and singer Elaine Stritch; Alexandra Jacobs 2019 biography of Stritch, Still Here, reports that she carried out a relationship with Conrad Hilton as a young woman (in addition to known dalliances with Marlon Brando, Gig Young and Ben Gazzara). In 1951, Stritch would have been 26 and Hilton 63. Hilton had divorced from Zsa Zsa Gabor in 1947, and would not remarry until 1976. Hilton commonly went by the nickname "Connie" throughout his life, though this reads as an especially personal inscription. Uncommon book with a rare signature, before even making consideration of the recipient. BOOK: Publisher's black boards with gold lettering to spine and front panel; boards a little worn to extremities, scratched along bottom edge; top-stain faded, internally clean save for inscription to ffep. DJ: Unclipped jacket with $2.50 price to inner flap, faded to spine, hinges worn, with tears and spots of loss to head of spine, bottom right corner of front cover, and to top and bottom edge of back cover. Still presents well, despite flaws.
