El estudio analítico recorre las contribuciones de Lenin y Chayanov, de Hilton y Dobb, de Brenner y sus críticos, del enfoque demografista y de la historiografía de tema hispanista, y las tendencias actuales en el estudio de la transición; el estudio empírico examina las modalidades de gestión de la renta y las divergencias en la tasa de explotación relativa, la actuación política de las elites campesinas, la posibilidad de aprovechamiento de terrenos comunales y de cercamiento del open field, las prácticas de comercialización y la intervención señorial sobre los mercados locales y las diversas relaciones económicas entre campesinos, principalmente el empleo de trabajadores asalariados y su forma social.
