In his capacity as a decorative artist, John has done a great deal of work in the Cyclades, in particular on the small island of Schinoussa. One of the outcomes of this has been a growing fascination with what happened to colour on the buildings of Greece and the islands in particular. Why are so many buildings today white? Has that always been the fashion there? White is what we tourists expect, but is that white authentic for the Cycladic islands in particular? John has researched the answers to these questions, visiting the islands and examining the walls of older buildings, looking for traces of the 'lost colours' and their history. An enthusiastic cook, he has also taken the opportunity to sample â" and weave into his researches â" the cuisine of the Greek islands. Parallels emerge between colour and food, driven largely by the same external forces.

An exhaustive collection of twenty-three of the Collins illustrated pocket edition of the works of Sir Walter Scott. An eminent writer and historian, Scott remains a leading figure in Scottish history, best known for his "Waverly" novels and impressive narrative poems, such as Marmion and The Lady of the Lake. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original maroon leatherette soft covers. The Abbot features a colour postcard tipped in to page 266; The Betrothed features the frontispiece and first two pages of the John S. Brown and Sons Canadian edition of the Holy Bible, folded in two and heavily discoloured and spotted, tipped in to the front of the work; Peveril of the Peak contains an advertisement for the Glasgow-based wholesale musicseller Frank Simpson to page 210. Externally, lovely condition with only minor bumping and rubbing. Light fading along some of the spines, especially to Castle Dangerous and The Bride of Lammermoor. A few marks can be seen across the collection, more prominent to the rear of Rob Roy. Peak and Peveril features slightly heavier loss of cloth along the rear joint, reinforced with tape. Internally, firmly bound. The frontispiece and title page of The Antiquary and Woodstock remain unopened, as does page 386 to The Antiquary.
