Joseph Heller (May 1, 1923 December 12, 1999) was an American author of novels, short… stories, plays, and screenplays. His best-known work is his debut novel Catch-22 (1961), a satire on war and bureaucracy, whose title has become a synonym for an absurd or contradictory choice. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twice, in 1972 and 1975. In 1942, at age 19, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was sent to the Italian Front, where he flew 60 combat missions as a B-25 bombardier. His unit was the 488th Bombardment Squadron, 340th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. After the war, Heller studied English at the University of Southern California and then New York University on the G.I. Bill, graduating from the latter institution in 1948. In 1949, he received his M.A. in English from Columbia University. Following his graduation from Columbia, he spent a year as a Fulbright scholar in St. Catherine's Society, Oxford before teaching English composition at Pennsylvania State University for two years (195052). He then briefly worked for Time Inc., before taking a job as a copywriter at a small advertising agency, where he worked alongside future novelist Mary Higgins Clark. At home, Heller wrote. He was first published in 1948, when The Atlantic ran one of his short stories. The story nearly won the "Atlantic First". Good as Gold is the story of children grown up, parents grown old, and lovers grown apart. Good as Gold is the third novel written by Joseph Heller. Portions of it were printed in The New York Times in 1976, and in Playboy in April 1979. The book was published in late 1979. The dust jacket was illustrated by Paul Bacon. Dr. Bruce Gold is a Jewish, middle-aged, university English professor, unhappily married, hated by his father and brother and ignored by his children. He is the author of one book, four essay collections, "derivative" short stories, and "atrocious" poems. Because he has favorably reviewed a book by the US president, he is offered the chance for success in the form of the job as the first-ever Jewish Secretary of State. To get the job, he is willing to divorce his wife and marry the daughter of an anti-Semitic elder statesman. The novel was well regarded by both fans of Heller and literary critics, being viewed as a return to the gag and verbal play that Heller established in Catch-22 and abandoned in favor of the scathing sarcasm and the darker story in Something Happened. Good as Gold functions as a satire on the U.S. government, in a manner similar to the satirization of the army in Catch-22 and the corporation in Something Happened. Gore Vidal listed Good as Gold as one of his five favorite post-World War II novels, describing it as Heller "at his deadly best, illuminating a hustler on the make in politics". The New York Times reviewer John Leonard called Good as Gold a "savage" novel, "a nightmare of abuse and opportunism, of surreal graffiti.a nursery rhyme laced with acid." Derived from a Kirkus review: Bruce Gold is, there is no mistaking, a Jew. A college professor and bored writer of articles and books of 'fiery caution and crusading inertia,' he comes to the attention of the White House, through an old school chum on the staff there. The Washington idiots love Bruce's turns of phrase ('Nothing succeeds as planned' 'boggle the mind'); the more imbecilic the prose, the more they adore it, and they offer him a position anywhere on the scale from 'close Presidential source' to Secretary of State. (Bruce would love that, if only to crown his obsessive hatred of Henry Kissinger, whom he can't talk about without lapsing into a wicked, galled display of Yiddish.) The White House here plainly stands for archetypal stupidity, the way the Army stood for confusion and lunacy in Catch-22, with about the same effect: a balloon-y, cartoon-y straw man of manic plenitude. But Heller's real talents come bursting out when he's dealing with Bruce among his own. Bruce's old friends from Coney Island all suddenly appearsuccessful publishers, doctors, editors of little magazines: 'Invite a Jew to the White Houseand you make him your slave.' A shady garment manufacturer, Spotty Weinrock, and his practical-joke-playing doctor brother, Murshie, are hilarious, Mel-Brooksian portraits. And the book positively sings when Bruce is at table with his family. There's his octogenarian father, whom everyone wants to ship down to a Miami Beach condominium, but who refuses to leavehe couldn't bear to forgo the pleasure of noodging his grown children with 80 years' worth of stored-up contrariness and belittling. And there's older brother Sid, plus five sisters, who've been put on earth (as Bruce sees it) to make him feel like dreck, but in a 'nice' way. All the big pieces provide a great, sloppy, assaulting, impolite comic energy. Heller's loose now, and taking different sorts of risks; here he's taking us deep into familial dread and laughter.
