Original burgundy cloth binding with gilt lettering on front board and spine. Wear at edges and corners, as well as discoloration and damage to cloth at the top of spine. Some scuffing to boards. Deep teal glazed pastedowns are unmarked, though front pastedown is worn at hinge. Pages are tanned but unmarked. The contents of this book originally appeared in the Eighth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Massachusetts. Chapters include the early treatment of the insane, Pinel's reform and European progress, English progress and Conolly, American progress, modern methods of less restraint, responsibility for crime and definitions of insanity, Massachusetts statistics and asylum accommodation, supervision by the state, and more.
