This book attempts to provide some information about the course which events have taken in one particular sphere of Chinese activities within this period. The book presents a short factual account of the economic development of China since the foundation of the Peoples Republic. After brief surveys of the previously existing economic pattern, and of the economic doctrines and programmes by which the Chinese Government have been guided, the authors describe the situation which faced the Government when they first came to power, their attempts to meet this during the period of rehabilitation which followed, the transformation of the economic institutions of the country, the introduction of large-scale planning and the course of the First Five-Year Plan and the Great Leap Forward which followed it. There are separate chapters on the changed economic geography of the country, on the treatment of private enterprise, on the organization of labour and on Soviet assistance. - - - 2. Auflage.
