For eighteen days, in the spring of 1983, fifty-three scientists and post-graduate students from nine countries, assisted by divers and technicians, investigated a wide variety of aspects of the biology of Hong Kong molluscs. the molluscan fauna of Hong Kong is very diverse but poorly known. the principal aim of this Workshop was to further the study of Hong Kong?s molluscan fauna and to demonstrate that, through international co-operation, real advances can be made in our understanding of the natural environment and, particularly important in Hong Kong, those factors which are agents in its destruction. These Proceedings contail1 forty-eight original papers dealing with various aspects of the taxonomy, functional morphology, physiology, behaviour and ecology of Hong Kong molluscs, all resulting from research initiated at the Workshop. It is thus an accurate record of the work done, but, in its pages, the reader may also obtain a glimpse of the friendship and camaraderie engendered among the Workshop participants. The Workshop was sponsored by UNESCO, the World Health Organization, the Jeffrey?s Association, the Commonwealth Foundation and the University of Hong Kong. Many other organizations and Institutions lent support in the provision of funds enabling their national scientists and students to attend. Private benefaction paid for the hire of research vessels, but the real success of the workshop lies not in its cost effectiveness, but in the willingness of all participants and organizers to co-operate towards a common academic goal. the fruits of this friendship and endeavour are now available, in these Proceedings, for all to read. 681 pp., ill., 2 Vols br. gr. 8.…
