Meslier?s foremost concern is with social justice: he condemns the Catholic Church, as well as the French aristocracy, as standing, hypocritically, in opposition to this. His materialist philosophy sets reason - which embraces brotherhood and equality - against faith - which he claims subjugates the masses to the powerful few - and concludes with the abolition of God and the Church in order to create rural communities based on equality. He has been hailed as an early proponent of communism as well as of animal rights. This edition contains Voltaire?s biographical sketch of Meslier, Holbach?s interpretation of his ideas, Le bon sens du Curé Meslier, and the selection made from Meslier?s manuscripts by Voltaire, Extrait du testament de J. Meslier. This translation, by Rousset de Missy and Scheurleer, was first published in 1714 and includes the Lettre d?un médecin arabe à un fameux Professseur de l?Université de Hall en Saxe, sur les reproches à fait à Mahomet. traduit à l?arabe, 1713, appended to the 1714 edition printed in the Hague. Also included in this edition is the critical reaction to Collins? work by Jean-Pierre de Crousaz, Examen du Traité de la liberté de penser, which was first published in Amsterdam in 1718. At the core of Collins? argument is his defence of free-thinking as a natural right and a religious duty, for which he used as evidence the many disagreements between the clergy. It was largely this that laid him open to accusations of atheism and using freethinking as a platform for a dangerous self-serving and libertine agenda. The work was publicly burnt in England and provoked dozens of replies including those from Jonathan Swift, Benjamin Hoadly, George Berkeley and Richard Bentley. Rare. First edition of the author's 'Treatise on the physical education of young children, or practical thoughts on how to provide a better constitution for citizens." The text was the inspiration for Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile, ou De l'education, 1762, which he considered to be among the best of his writings. Emile was banned in Paris and Geneva and was publicly burned in 1762, the year of its first publication. During the French Revolution, Emile served as the inspiration for what became a new national system of education. / Jean-Charles Desessartz was a French doctor, teaching in the Faculty of Paris, member of the Institute. He received his doctorate at Reim, then moving to Villers-Cotterets, then Noyon, taking a medical position under the Duke of Orleans. In 1776 Desessartz became dean of the faculty of Paris.
