First edition in German, a translation of Nouvelle methode pour diviser les instruments de mathematique et d'astronomie, 1768. The 6th Duke of Chaulnes (1714-1769), a French astro…nomer-physicist who was particularly interested in scientific instruments. He observed the transit of Venus in 1761, Paris. "His love for optics and astronomy led to attempts to improve the construction of astronomical instruments." In 1755 he presented to the Academie a piece on rendering instruments of a small radius more accurate. "The substance of this memoir was published in the Academy's . . ." reports. A second paper in the same volume also dealt with the same topic. In 1767 he added remarks on the achromatic telescope. Here for the first time, he applied the microscope to measurement of refractive lenses. In this work, he describes the production of a special microscope, apparently to be built in England. At one time he built the largest electrostatic machine, used to reproduce and demonstrate for the first time in France, the effects of lightening. In 1743 he became an honorary member of the Academie des sciences (Paris). A Bordeaux doctor who specialised in medical hygiene and forensics, Saincric wrote widely on the medical topography of Bordeaux and its surroundings. He was a member of the Académie de Bordeaux and was twice president of the Société de Médecine de Bordeaux in 1824 and 1837. Dedicated to ?Sophie?, this work is a book of parts, with ?Avis de l?Editeur?, ?Suite de la note du libraire? and ?Introduction? by way of prefatory material, then the title work, ?Le Sacrifice de l?Amour, ou la Messe de Cythere? (pp. 17-48) and ?Sermon prêché a Gnide, a la Cérémonie du Mai, par le berger Sylvain? (pp. 49-63). The major part of the volume is the dictionary of amorous terms, which is taken largely from Marechal?s Dictionnaire d?Amour, 1788, with additional material from the earlier Dictionnaire de l?Amour, dans lequel on trouvera l?explication des termes les plus usité dans cette langue, 1741 by Jean-François Dreux du Radier. An index follows the dictionary. ?The Little Dictionary of Love has become very rare; you can only find it in very few libraries. It therefore seemed urgent to offer a new edition of it, corrected and augmented. In taking on this work, we believe we are performing an essential service to the fervent lovers of Venus and of his dear son. We have not, moreover, omitted anything which might make this new Dictionary worthy of public favour. It collects together the most striking articles by berger Sylvain with a work which was published anonymously at the Hague in 1741; and we have improved it with a host of pleasant pieces, taken from the best writers? A former maritime pilot, he lost a leg at Bantry in the 1689 French invasion of Ireland, causing him to leave active service, and was appointed Regius professor of hydrography and navigation at the Royal School of Hydrography at Croisic in lower Brittany. Provenance: with the ink library stamps of the Library of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on the title-page First edition. Cassini, was a French astronomer and geodesist, who continued the surveying work initially undertaken by his father, Jacques Cassini, and in the process created a monumental map of France. "one of the best-known artifacts of the eighteenth century.". Cassini succeeded his father as director of the Paris Observatory in 1771, but his achievements as an astronomer were less distinguished then those as a geodesist and cartographer. From the 1740s "until his death, Cassini de Thury directed work on a general topographic map of France. Published in 1789, this "Carte géométrique de la France" ("Geometric Map of France"), or "Carte de Cassini," was the first map of an entire country drawn up on the basis of extensive triangulation and topographic surveys" (Encyclopedia Britannia online). The map included here corresponds to the key map for the eventual megalith which consisted of 180 sheets measuring about 11 metres square. "By 1760, 50 maps of the 180 projected were finished, all in the north-central part of France. Between 1760 and 1770, 38 were published, covering all of eastern France, central France north of Lyon, and western France east of Rennes and north of Poitiers. Forty-five more were available by 1780, covering Anjou, Poitou, the Dauphin, and Provence. The Limousin, the Pyrenees frontier, and the region of Nice appeared between 1780 and 1789. A MAGNIFICENT and very detailed map of Burgundy engraved by Bourgoign le Jeune after Seguin and Cassini, showing the region divided into dioceses, bailiwicks and sub-delegations, all routes, waterways, cities, towns, villages, forests and fields, and all surrounded by a handsome and broad border with large acanthus leaves at each corner and surmounted by a large sun and cloud burst containing the arms of France, with three magnificent, detailed rococo allegorical cartouches containing the legend, the title, and a vignette of the city of Dijon, designed by Galey (some minor browning to one or two sheets). In 1747 King Louis XV of France (1710-1774), known as Louis the Beloved (Louis le bien aimé), of the House of Bourbon, commissioned César-François Cassini de Thury (Cassini III 1714-1784) to create a complete survey of France, the "Carte de France". This was a huge undertaking, initially funded by the crown, until 1756, subsequently until 1762 by a company of shareholders, and thereafter by the individual provinces of France. Burgundy was one of the first provinces to provide funding for the survey of their region. Of the resulting 180 map sheets of France, 12 created between 1752 and 1762 covered the area of Burgundy, and were used to create this astonishing and first stand-alone regional map of the project. Other regions followed suite, creating a series of maps more decorative and majestic in appearance than those directly published for Cassini's "Carte de France". Cassini's mammoth map of France was the first complete national map constructed on modern principles of surveying and astronomy. As such, historian Josef Konvitz considers it nothing less than a "monument to the taste and intelligence of the French Enlightenment." The ambitious project, which was jointly managed with Cassini de Thury's son, Jacques-Dominique, ultimately took nearly seven decades to complete and required the efforts of more than eighty individuals. "By 1760, 50 maps of the 180 projected were finished, all in the north-central part of France. Between 1760 and 1770, 38 were published, covering all of eastern France, central France north of Lyon, and western France east of Rennes and north of Poitiers. Though their venture had been initially funded by the French government, Cassini de Thury had later decided to finance the project through the selling of shares to nobles, officials, and other leading members of society like Louis XV's mistress, Madame de Pompadour. In 1793 the revolutionary government expropriated the Cassini's maps, as they were of great military value. The Revolutionary government at that time also proceeded to dissolve Cassini de Thury's company and to execute its fo.

Het gedrukte document werd blad per blad gemonteerd in een uitsparing in het midden van een groot vel wit papier ( 51 x 38 cm) zodanig dat beide…zijden van het bedrukte blad kunnen gelezen worden bij het omdraaien van dit kader-papier. Herkomst: 18e eeuwse collectie van de Antwerpse Jezuïeten. (Veiling Walter Couvreur). Onderwerp: Zeer omstandige verdediging (in beroep) van de twee bovengenoemde brouwers. Volgens een vonnis van 9 October 1710 werden de brouwers in het ongelijk gesteld in verband met een preferentieële behandeling van hun tegoeden in de successie van wijlen Anthoni Scheerders. Volgens een request van16 Augustus 1546 (!) hebben Antwerpse brouwers voorrang bij de verdeling van de baten bij een failissement of successie. In dit uitvoerig betoog wordt ingegaan op vele precedenten en wetswijzigingen. Dit zeldzame document geeft een goed beeld van de rechtspleging aan het begin van de 18e eeuw. Het is opgesteld in een bombastisch juridisch jargon, doorspekt met Latijnse citaten en Franse woorden. E.g. Zelfs de brand van het Antwerpse stadhuis ( Spaanse Furie 1576) waarbij wetteksten verloren gingen wordt hier aangehaald. (Bibliografisch niet nawijsbaar- April 2020).
