Attractive smyth sewn maroon cloth bound hardcover with gilt stamped spine and front cover. New. $65. * Reprint of the only edition of the first English treatise on the laws governing corporate bodies. The first six sections define types of corporations and their component parts. The following three sections discuss charters, "what ordinances a corporation may make" and "the nature of a corporation." The final part of the book is a collection of forms. Among the corporations discussed are two established by the Rump Parliament: The Norwich Weavers and The Corporation for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England. Active in the Protectorate, where he was Cromwell's legal advisor, Sheppard [d. 1675?] aimed to reform the common law. Ahead of his time in many ways, some of his proposals anticipate changes that were adopted in the nineteenth century. His work was well-received and deeply influential. Some of his books, most notably The Touchstone of Common Assurances (1648), were standard authorities into the nineteenth century.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Folio (19 6/8 x 14 4/8 inches). 69 fine double-page engraved maps, including some folding, all mounted on guards, by De l'Isle, extra-illustrated with four maps, including two by Sanson, one by Jaillot and one by Muller (some separations at gutters, map by Muller of Bohemia creased and repaired on…verso). Contemporary mottled calf (worn at extremities with minor loss, early repairs to head and foot of the spine and corners). Provenance: early manuscript numbering and titles to verso of maps. THE FIRST MAP TO NAME NEW ORLEANS A fine composite atlas including many important maps: "Mappemonde a l'usage du Roy" (1720) (creased at gutter); and several relating to America: "Carte d'Amerique" (1722); "Carte du Canada ou de la Nouvelle France" (1703); "Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi" (1718); "Carte du Mexique et de la Floride" (1703, Schwartz & Ehrenberg pl. 82); "Carte de l'Isle de Saint Domingue" (1725); "Carte des Antilles Françoises et des Isles Voisines" (1717); "Carte de la Terre Ferme du Perou, du Bresil et du Pays des Amazones" (1703); "Carte du Paraguay du Chile" (1703). Also included is the "Orbis veteribus moti tabula nova" (1714). The celebrated "Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi" is one of the most important maps of the American West, this issue with New Orleans named, and based on the maps of La Salle, Spanish expeditions and maps from Le Moyne. The first map to correct the position of the mouth of the Mississippi River and the Mississippi Valley: "with their corrected course of the Mississippi and these many items farther west, [his maps] are towering landmarks along the path of Western cartographic development" (Wheat "Mapping the Transmississippi West" 99 and pp.58-59). A student of the noted French cartographer, Giovanni Domenico Cassini, and the son of Claude Delisle, the geographer and historian to the king, Guillaume Delisle developed a strong basis for his cartographical skills. He produced his first terrestrial globe in 1699, and displayed a profound talent for capturing a high level of accuracy and geographical knowledge. In 1718, Louis XIV celebrated his much revered skill and accuracy by appointing him First Geographer to the French Monarchy, a title created specifically for him. In his many years in this position, Delisle became known for his correction of geographical errors common to his contemporaries, including dispelling the rumor of mythical lands in still-unexplored regions. Cohen, "Mapping the West" pp.48-50. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. An 18th-century hand-colored copper engraved map of Ukraine and the Black Sea in a fine impression with original hand-coloring in its period. 52x62 cm. In French. Scale: 1/2750000. Slight stains on the upper margin. Faded on paper. Otherwise a very good map. Rare in original color sho…wing the Black Sea and its surroundings, of the little Tartary and the Black Sea of Delisle republished by Renier and Joshua Ottens. Can be seen on the map, Moldavia, Bulgaria, Natolia, Little Tartarie, Ukraine, and Crimea with contiguous regions and hinterland. In the century when this map was prepared (18th century), firstly, the territory of Crimea was controlled by the Crimean Khanate, then it was annexed by the Russian Empire on 19 April [O.S. 8 April] 1783. The period before the annexation was marked by Russian interference in Crimean affairs, a series of revolts by Crimean Tatars, and Ottoman ambivalence. The annexation began 134 years of rule by the Russian Empire, which ended with the Russian Revolution of 1917. Guillaume Delisle was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. At 27, Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. Delisle's progress culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. He was appointed to teach geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV's son, a task for which he received a salary. Again, his father's reputation as a man of science probably helped the younger Delisle. In Delisle's case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father's. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, and Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire's claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas. Publisher: Jan Barend Elwe (177-1815), was a Dutch publisher and bookseller who reissued maps by De l'Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sanson's and Jaillot's maps of 1656 and 1676. This map was published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries and regions.
