Crozat? and the arms of th…e duchesse de Gramont gilt on both covers. 8vo (160 x 100 mm), pp. [viii], 602 (ie, 604, pp. 334-335 repeated), [3], collating a4, A-PP8, title page engraved by Leon Gaultier, paper a little browned throughout, with some ink staining and light wear, A scarce classically-inspired ?roman galant? by the Poitiers-born soldier and novelist, Louis Moreau du Bail, and an early example of the genre. Du Bail?s prolific output, though not didactic, was intended as an inspirational and moral celebration of romantic love. About half of his thirteen known novels, including the present, have a classical inspiration, and many of these are notable for their strong heroines. In this novel, the heroine is modelled on the fictitious illegitimate daughter of King Henry III of France and tells the story of her two marriages, the betrayal by her second husband and her subsequent ruin, captivity and escape from execution. Not much is known about Du Bail, except that he was a soldier and a novelist: ?Un écuyer poitevin de confession catholique, né certainement avant 1600, qui connut la vie militaire et a captivité: telles sont les maigres indications que nous pouvons ramasser? (Alain Niderst). This is the sixth of his known thirteen novels, which were published between 1622 and 1646. ?[Son] inspiration est toujours élévée. Contemporary mottled calf, and contemporary speckled calf, gilt (a bit scuffed, front free endpaper of "Suite" torn with loss); preserved in two green clamshell boxes). Provenance: with the near contemporary ownership inscription of Lavalette de Montagneux on the recto of the first blank of each volume, plates numbered in manuscript, and alphabetical indices in manuscript at the end of each volume; the "Suite" inscribed "Pour / Monsieur Jordan / conseiler du Roy, Fer / A Bar-le-Duc" on the verso of the table of contents. First edition, second issue, with the additional "Suite" of plates. Possibly inscribed by a member of the publisher's family to Camille Jordan (1771 - 1821), who was ennobled and named a councillor of state to Louis XVIII at Bar-le-Duc. Jordan was a well-travelled politician, having been born in Lyons which fell to republican forces in 1793, he fled to Switzerland, and from there travelled to England. On the restitution in 1814 he returned to France. Issued in six annual parts from 1700-1705, the maps are based on the new observations of the Academie des Sciences, and with the assistance of Philipe de la Hire. The "Suite" consists mostly of works dated 1714-1716, with two duplicates from the first volume with changed dates, consisting of the maps of Paris (1701, now 1705) and Neuchatel (1699, now 1705). A geographic encyclopedia of images and a celebration of the French Empire under the Sun King, with maps of French possessions in the western hemisphere, detailed views of the grand waterworks at Marly, views of the great palaces and chateaux, views and plans of the Paris Observatory, and samples of military architecture. Maps related to America in the first volume include, the two world maps, Amerique, Canada, Mouth of the Mississippi, California and New Mexico, New Spain, Antilles, Terra Firma Peru, Cartegena, Chile, Straits of Magellan; those in the "Suite" are Jamaica, Santo Domingo, and Mexico city. Maps related to Asia, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans include Asie, East Indies, East Asia, and the Philippines. Nicolas de Fer was one of the great map-producers of the 17th century. He became the protégé of Le Grand Dauphin, Louis de France, son of the great Louis XIV in 1689, and when the Duke of Anjou (grandson of Louis XIV) acceded to the throne of Spain, de Fer was proclaimed 'Geographer of the King Spain and of the Dauphin', or again 'Geographer of the Royal children'. De Fer, like the other map-editors encouraged Royal propaganda in his publications, with such headings as "This map that I distribute to the people displays the theatre of your victories." His shop's sign was in fact 'the Royal Globe' an emblem he was very proud of for the image of his armillary sphere can be found in the majority of his publications.
