An attractive and very readable edition of Motteux's English translation, first published in 1712, together with a fine collection of etched illustrations. First published thus by William Peterson 1879-84.

With a total of 27 engraved plates spread between the four volumes, including a frontispiece to volume I. Contemporary speckled calf, with raised bands and gilt volume numbers and ruling to spines. No titles. Volume I lacks pp.13/14. Some heavy brown staining to pp.23/24 and facing plate in volume I. A horizontal tear right across pp.49/50 in volume IV. Moderate general spotting and toning throughout, with heavier thumbing to fore-edge of volume I. Black ink ownership of J.B. Crompton to fly-leaf of each volume, dated 1794, and very small black ink ownerships to each title page, dated 1766. Moderate wear and bumping to bindings; joints split or starting, with sturdy cloth reinforcements to all hinges. Good. Motteux's English translation was first published in 1700-03, and revised by Ozell from 1719. ESTC: T59498.

Half bound in black Morocco lettered and patterned in gilt to spine with marbled boards. Marbled flyleaf, illustrative frontispiece, and top edges in gilt to all volumes. Untrimmed edges. All volumes: Some edges remain uncut, toning to edges of textblock, some bumping to corners and spines. Vol. 2: extremely small tear to marbled paper on back board. Vol. 4: some denting to top edge of textblock. All very good. Originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, this is an attractive translated set of the Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes.

6 volumes octavo 7x4 inches- handsomely leather bound in full eighteenth century calf gilt, with some repairs. Half titles, titles, text complete and illustrated with 39 engraved plates after Coypel and Picart (engraved by R. Brunet). Occasional spotting. A good copy of this eighteenth century edition in a period binding. This particular edition not listed in the bibliography- Cohen.
