Précieux exemplaire de La Beaumelle avec sa signature autographe au recto du frontispice du premier volume et un feuillet autographe (relié entre les pages 70-71) dans le dernier volume des Mémoires : Pièces justificatives. 34 lignes de son écriture fine et lisible dans lesquelles La Beaumelle reprend un sonnet satirique (p. 68) attribué à Antoine Hamilton d'après la note en bas de page dans laquelle Mme de Maintenon est accusée de « vice avant l'âge de quinze ans ».Dénoncé comme apocryphe, bien que La Beaumelle avait jamais prétendu qu?ils aient été rédigés par elle ou voulu les faire prendre pour tels, les Mémoires furent composés grâce à l'appui discret des religieuses de Saint-Cyr. Cette virulente annotation manuscrite justifie pleinement le soin qu?il a pris pour rétablir la vérité dans son ouvrage, et non pas noircir celle qu?il rend responsable de la Révocation de l?Édit de Nantes : « Ces vers sont contraires absolument à la vérité de l'histoire? Édition originale des Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de Madame de Maintenon (6 volumes) et des Lettres de Madame de Maintenon (9 volumes) publiés par La Beaumelle. La page de titre du premier volume des Mémoires est ornée d'une gravure de la médaille de Louis XIV relative à la fondation de Saint-Cyr. Portrait-frontispice gravé de Mme de Maintenon jeune dans ce même volume, et portrait frontispice du tome III où Mme de Maintenon apparaît plus âgée. Par ailleurs, la page de titre du tome IX des Lettres de Madame de Maintenon précise que les lettres contenues dans ce volume ont été recueillies par l'abbé Berthier et que cet ouvrage a été publié à Bruxelles en 1755. La Beaumelle n'est cité qu'à partir de la seconde édition.« Après une vive polémique suscitée par la question de l'authenticité des lettres de Mme de Maintenon, il est aujourd'hui avéré qu'aucun doute ne doit subsister. His epic poem Les Tragiques (1616) is widely regarded as his masterpiece) was the son of a zealous Huguenot who instilled in him an abiding protestant sympathy and an almost reckless disregard for personal safety in the Protestant struggle. He was present at the siege of Orleans where his father was killed. He soon after went to Geneva to study under Beza. From there he attached himself to the Huguenot army under the command of the Prince of Conde. Eventually he joined the retinue of Henry of Navarre, and proved himself of great service to the future king, both as a soldier and a counselor. After Henry's elevation to the throne, the king found d'Aubigne's rough manner and caustic criticisms tiresome (in his literary works he freely exercised his gift of sarcasm with regard to the king and his family) and the rift between the two widened when the king converted to Catholicism. When Marie de' Medici became regent following Henry's assassination in 1610, she embraced the Counter-Reformation and Aubigné's isolation made him an easy target. He was proscribed in 1620 and fled to Geneva where he lived for the rest of his life, though the hatred of the French court showed itself in procuring a sentence of death to be recorded against him more than once. He devoted the period of his exile to study, and supervising the fortifications of Bern and Basel which were designed as a material defence of the cause of Protestantism. - Copy on heavy paper.…
