Zustand: Fine. This original 1786 French manuscript set, originating from Lille (Nord department, Hauts-de-France, France) and Paris, features an authentic Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) and an endorsed bill of exchange by Barthélemy-François-Joseph Moufle d'Angerville. The author wrote a book that helped start the French Revolution, specifically continuing the massively influential clandestine chronicle "Mémoires secrets," which spread political scandals, court gossip, and rebellious sentiment throughout the Ancien Régime. Written entirely in French, the documents trace a 300-livre financial transaction involving a local Lille merchant named Cuvelier Marrancy, a Tax Receiver named Le Roy, a Parisian banker named Pichault, and Moufle d'Angerville himself, providing a vital historical record of 18th-century European banking. The original folded address leaf bears a highly important "De Calonne" handwritten postal mark, indicating the letter bypassed standard postage and traveled under a ministerial free frank authorized by Charles Alexandre de Calonne, King Louis XVI's Controller-General of Finances. English Translation Letter (May 18, 1786): "Paris, May 18, 1786. I received, Sir, a few days ago your letter of the 12th of this month, in response to my three, and I see that your errands, as I suspected, were the cause of your delay in replying to me. Be that as it may, the bill of exchange for three hundred livres which was included, was also paid by Mr. Pichault and has been credited to me - this will serve as a receipt and discharge to pass into your account; when it takes place, since you estimate as well as Mr. Cuvelier Marrancy to have to postpone it. I have the honor to be very sincerely, Sir, your very humble and very obedient servant, Moufle d'Angerville." Bill of Exchange (May 12, 1786): "Lille, May 12, 1786. Good for 300 livres. I pray you to pay to the order of Monsieur Le Roy the sum of three hundred livres, value received which he paid me in cash, which you will pass to my account. I have the honor to be without further notice, your very humble, obedient servant, Signed D. Cuvelier Marrancy father. To Monsieur Pichault, Banker, Rue du Temple, Paris. [Reverse Endorsement]: Paid to the order of Mr. Moufle d'Angerville, value in account, Lille this May 12, 1786. Signed Le Roy.". Signed by Author(s).…
