Austrian aristocrat Count Ferdinand Czernin's father was Ottokar Czernin, who served as Austro-Hungary's (third last) foreign minister from 22 December 1916 to 16 April 1918. Czernin was an early opponent of National Socialism and was associated with the Free Austrian Movement during World War II, serving as chairman of the 'new Austrian Action.' Czernin died in New York City in 1965, where he had moved during the War. He remained a steadfast proponent and defender of Europe. "In fact, we had exactly the same attitude which I find everywhere nowadays, in England, France, Switzerland, the "It-can't-happen-here" attitude, which, though it makes people wonder at the bestiality and stupidity of men, and makes them shudder at times at the stories which occasionally manage to cross the frontiers of the dictator countries, doesn't seem able to make them grasp the full importance of what is going on, and makes them question why, if people haven't gone mad, they put up with it. Then National-Socialism happened to us." The book pretends to skirt the lines of reality to protect its humour, being a look at the people and countries of Europe being pushed off the edge. Its light-hearted Author's Note is flush with irony; Czernin claims that the book is fiction. "All characters, as far as there are any in the book, are drawn entirely from imagination. The greatest possible care has been taken to avoid the use of names of real live people, and if any such names have been used this has been done inadvertently and no reference to such persons is intended. In fact all characters in this book are dummies." But the following page is a list of 'The Principal Characters of the Book', replete with European political figures. It is not fiction, and perhaps the satire thins further as the realities of the Nazi aggression become clear during the writing process. The book traces the collapse of European political stability in the 1930s, detailing the rise of the totalitarian regimes, the failures of appeasement, and the looming catastrophe of Nazi expansion, and all countries and characters involved with a deep and interested knowledge passion but also a cavalier manner, and most of all great humour. But the sort of humour that sometimes occurs from being truthful. On "Staying a Dictator: Kill, exile, or at least arrest, all people you are afraid of. Don't be afraid of anybody. At the Ritz he elevated the art of bartending, personally greeting patrons and championing hospitality as an expression of sophisticated social ritual. His clientele included some of the twentieth century's most celebrated cultural figures, such as Coco Chanel, Jean Cocteau, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cole Porter, and Ernest Hemingway. In 1936 he published The Artistry of Mixing Drinks, a richly illustrated and meticulously composed book of more than 300 recipes that became a landmark in cocktail literature and influenced professional bartending long beyond his lifetime. Meier remained at his post throughout the German occupation, using the unique access and discretion afforded by his position to quietly aid the French Resistance. Credible postwar accounts suggest that he helped secure forged papers and assistance for Jewish clients and other fugitives, while also serving as an informal conduit for information passed between resistant elements embedded within the social world of the Ritz, a hotel frequented by senior Nazi officials. So it is, invoking the shared sense of the ideals of old Europe in the dedication, and recalling the book's dedication, "To all of you who still go on fighting, be in only for your own souls' salvation" that Frank Meier, an Old European who found his own way of fighting, is the perfect recipient.
