Includes some of the finest examples of oriental ornamentation in a range of media - lacquer, carving, metalwork, embroidery, enamel, pottery etc. Until the Revolution of 1868, Japanese art was almost unknown to the Western world. As trade links grew after the Revolution, interest increase with Thomas Cutler publishing his Grammar of Japanese Ornament and Design in 1880, closely followed by George Ashdown Audsley's The Ornament of Arts in Japan two years later. This is a revision of their works.

Extreme darkening to the spine and a few scuffs and marks to the covers. A section of pages at the centre are loose but present, and there are a few cracks to the guttering. Everything else remains secure and the pages themselves are stiff and sturdy and pleasantly bright, with a pleasant lack of a tan and crisp and unfaded print. Pages have been handled but are in good condition overall. A reading and reference copy as-is. Contains 43 beautiful etchings with a paragraph of information for each. Thomas W. Cutler was a member of the Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects and one of the examiners in Architecture, as well as a past Vice-President of the Architectural Association of London, and a Medalist for Architecture in an Antwerp Exhibition in 1894.
