In den WarenkorbScarce Bristol printing: only six copies on ESTC and not listed by Ira Gruber in his comprehensive study. Originally published in Dublin in 1768, this timely provincial revision precedes the first London edition (the stated "Second Edition") by two years. In the aftermath of the Seven Years War, the army required innovative texts on regimental training and discipline. For infantry, "the best was Cuthbertson's. which reflected a deep knowledge of regimental affairs". From 1755 to 1768 Cuthbertson had "served as adjutant in the 5th Foot, thus acquiring through experience most of his considerable knowledge of regimental management" (Houlding, p. 216). Bland's seriously outmoded Treatise of Military Discipline, the most recent edition of which was the ninth of 1762, was the only available text dealing with the management of troops at company or battalion level. "Cuthbertson drew up his work to supply that need; full of admirably organized chapters on all aspects of regimental administration and routine, the book was aimed at the hundreds of subalterns who had no place to find all this material collected together in one place. Included too was a section on the regular exercising and manoeuvring of the battalion which, though brief, was without doubt the best short essay on training to have appeared to date". Cuthbertson was similarly advanced on the employment of light companies and the utility of the bayonet at close quarters. Like many similar professional publications of the period, Cuthbertson's System was first published privately and extremely well subscribed. "More than nine hundred fellow officers, including all who would command British forces during the War for American Independence" supported the edition (Gruber, p. 33). One of Gruber's "Books Preferred", it was in the libraries of both Lord Ligonier and his sometime aide-de-camp Sir Charles Hotham Thompson. ESTC T114996. Ira D. Gruber, Books and the British Army in the Age of the American Revolution, 2010; J. A. Houlding, Fit for Service: The Training of the British Army 1715-1795, 1981. Octavo (201 x 118 mm), pp. viii, 192, [2] (appendix title). Appendix of 16 letterpress tables at the rear, 3 folding. Bound without the errata slip after p. 8, found in some copies. Contemporary speckled calf, spine with gilt fillets either side of five raised bands, red morocco label, gilt scrolling edge roll. Binding professionally refurbished, a few scrapes to covers, paste toning to margins of first and last leaves, scattered foxing. A very good copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, scarce. In the aftermath of the Seven Years War, the army required innovative texts on regimental training and discipline. For infantry, "the best was Cuthbertson's. which reflected a deep knowledge of regimental affairs" (Houlding, p. 216). Contemporary ink signature of "Cope" to front free endpaper; Sir John Mordaunt Cope (1731-1770), colonel of the North Hampshire Militia, appears in the list of subscribers. Like many similar professional publications of the period, Cuthbertson's System was first published privately. It was extremely well subscribed: "More than nine hundred fellow officers, including all who would command British forces during the War for American Independence" supported the edition (Gruber, p. 33). As one of Gruber's "Books Preferred", it was in the libraries of both Lord Ligonier and his sometime aide-de-camp Sir Charles Hotham Thompson. Ligonier's library was "one of the largest, most comprehensive, and most discriminating collections of military books owned by any eighteenth-century British officer" (p. 98). Cuthbertson was perhaps born in Northamptonshire in 1730. Houlding states that "from 1755 to 1768 he served as adjutant in the 5th Foot, thus acquiring through experience most of his considerable knowledge of regimental management" (p. 216, n. 162). During the Seven Years War, the regiment took part in the raid on Cherbourg, the battles of Warburg and Kirch Denkem, where they captured a whole French regiment, and at Wilhelmsthal, before returning to Ireland at the Peace of Paris in 1763. The 5th foot remained in Ireland until 1774. They were nicknamed "The Shiners" for their exceptional attention to their "dress and appointments" (Brewis, p. 188). This was attributed to the efforts of Cuthbertson, who created an internal Order of Merit "for the Non-commission-officers, Drummers, and Private Men: by which the deserving Soldier will be encouraged to persevere in those paths, which led him to the enjoyment of so public a testimony of his Officers' approbation; and the vicious idle ones may be likewise tempted, to imitate that conduct, which gained the other such applause: a number of years (not less than seven) employed in the closest attention to military duty, and never in that space, having incurred the censure of a Court-martial." He died intestate in Salisbury on 23 December 1789, his estate, valued at "less than 300 pounds", inherited by his second wife Ann, née Goldwyer, whom he had married at St Margaret's, Westminster, just eight months earlier. ESTC locates just eight copies: BL, Cambridge, Oxford, Dublin City Libraries, Scotland, Honourable Artillery Company, Huntington, and Society of the Cincinnati. ESTC T129330. Jennie Batchelor, "Finding the Mysterious Miss Cuthbertson in the Lady's Magazine", The Lady's Magazine (1770-1818): Understanding the Emergence of a Genre, University of Kent online; Alfred Brewis, "The Order of Merit - 5th Regiment of Foot. 1767-1856", Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research, 2, 9, July 1923; Ira D. Gruber, Books and the British Army in the Age of the American Revolution, 2010; J. A. Houlding, Fit for Service: The Training of the British Army 1715-1795, 1981. Octavo (198 x 122 mm), xl, 239, 17 letterpress tables (3 folding). Recent quarter sheep, preserving contemporary red morocco label, Wide Comb pattern marbled sides, edges sprinkled green. Later pencil marginal markings to contents and rear pastedown. Boards rubbed, inner hinges strengthened; contents evenly toned and crisp, gathering O toned, paper flaw at I7 fore edge, closed tears and creases to K7 and N4 lower margins, bottom edges of O7-8 chipped, none of which affecting text; a very good copy.
