Document payorder for firewood for the French Army encamped at Speyer ("pour le chauffage de l'armée au Camp et Corps de Gardes"), signed by General Adam Philippe, Comte de Custine and Claude Blanchard. Both Custine (1740-1793) and Blanchard (1742-1802) fought in the American Revolution. Custine, who lead the French forces in the Rhine campagins that seized Speyer and Mainz, was guillotined in 1793 during the Reign of Terror. Old folds and light soiling, paper repairs at folds 4 pp. pen and ink on paper in French in various hands, with embossed seal. Signed.

Levachez (1760-1820) in Aquatinta oder Schabkunst, die historischen Szenen in Radierung von Jean Duplessi-Bertaux (1750-1818), der im Begleittext des Werkes als "le Callot de nos jours" bezeichnet wird. - Vollrandiges Exemplar. Grünschnitt (etwas berieben u. fleckig, Ecken bestoßen). Erste Ausgabe. Die Erinnerungen des Revolutions-Generals Custine sollte ursprünglich sein Sohn zu des Vaters Ehrenrettung veröffentlichen. Beide wurden jedoch von Marat 1793 bzw. 1794 aufs Schafott geschickt, so daß der Adjutant Custines die Schriften posthum herausgeben mußte. Custine (1740-93) hatte sich während des Feldzugs gegen die Niederlande unter Moritz von Sachsen, im Siebenjährigen Krieg sowie in Amerika im Krieg der Freistaaten gegen die Engländer ausgezeichnet. Aus Amerika zurück, wurde er zum Feldmarschall, 1791 zum Generalleutnant der Revolutionsarmee ernannt. 1789/90 gehörte er zunächst als Abgeordneter des lothringischen Adels, bald aber als Anhänger der Girondisten der Constituante an. 1792 erhielt er das Kommando über die französischen Truppen am Oberrhein, die unter ihm Speyer, Worms und Mainz eroberten. Custine, den durchaus ein revolutionäres Sendungsbewußtsein auszeichnete, führte in Mainz die Munizipalverfassung ein und wurde "die entscheidende Persönlichkeit der frühen Mainzer Republik" (Kat. Deutschland und die Französische Revolution, S.152). Als die Preußen und Österreicher das linke Rheinufer zurückeroberten und Mainz fiel, lastete man in Paris diese und andere Mißerfolge dem ohnehin als "Ci-devant" verdächtigen Custine an. Am 28. August 1793 wurde er guillotiniert. - Barbier III, 234; Heinsius I, 634 (mit dem Hinweis auf den Frankfurter Verlag Esslinger); Monglond III, 245. - Wenige Unterstreichungen in Buntstift.

Despite his former military success in service in the American and French Revolutionary wars Custine was found guilty of treason by a majority vote of the Revolutionary Tribunal on 27 August, and guillotined the following day. 'Custine (an ex-noble) was guillotined on 28 Aug. (in spite of his previous victories), accused of having treacherously caused the fall of Frankfort, Condé, Valenciennes, and Mayence. According to the English newspapers, he "kissed the crucifix, embraced his confessor. and at last was brought to the guillotine by force"' (BM Satires).'Custine stands on the scaffold beside the guillotine (left). Four ragged ruffians are about to bind him to the plank on which he is to lie; one says, "By Gar so we will serve all de Generals who do not conquer de whole World, and give them de Libertè [sic]". Custine says, "Pardon me Heaven for having been leagued with such a set of Blood hounds". A stout soldier pushes a weeping priest, who says "Let us Pray", down the steps (right) which lead up to the scaffold, saying, "Go to de diable & Your Prayers both". Below (right) stand republican soldiers with fixed bayonets much caricatured. On the extreme left a man kneels at the guillotine holding his hat in place of the usual basket; he says, "Begar I will have a Drink of de blood." Hand-coloured etching (243 × 385 mm), cut to plate mark. Traces of old mounting on verso at each corner, slight rubbing to upper left hand corner on recto.
