"His briefer addresses, particularly those on ceremonial occasions, were sometimes written and rewritten a dozen times. A well-remembered example is his "Emancipators" given at the Lister Centenary celebration in July 1927, which his secretary recalls was copied a dozen times." "The Lister Centenary exercises had long been planned, and H. C. appeared to have been more worried over his brief address, "Emancipators", than almost anything he had undertaken. The function was held in the huge McEwan Hall and, because of his particular aversion to microphones, Harvey Cushing refused politely but firmly to use the one which was suddenly placed before him without warning, being certain that he would never be able to deliver his address into this new modern contraption, and believing that he could make himself heard without it. Whether the audience did hear him or not is unknown, but he felt the address had been a failure and was extremely sensitive about it, even as was Mr. Lincoln after his Gettysburg address" Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp.457, 55.
