"There were also important papers from men who had come to work in Cushing's clinic. Frederick Foley, following up Weed's work on hypertonic solutions, published four papers on the reduction of intracranial tension by intravenous injection of strong salt solutions - the salt through its osmotic pressure withdrawing fluid from the brain tissue into the blood stream. This turned out to be an important technical procedure for tiding patients over an acute bout of increased intracranial pressure." Fulton p.471 Walker No.520; HC 182.

Boston Med. Surg. J., 197. - Reprinted from "The Boston Medical & Surgical Journal, October Twenty, 19271927, 8°, 6 pp., orig. Broschur. First Edition. Author"s offprint. "His briefer addresses, particularly those on ceremonial occasions, were sometimes written and rewritten a dozen times. A well-remembered example is his "Emancipators" given at the Lister Centenary celebration in July 1927, which his secretary recalls was copied a dozen times." "The Lister Centenary exercises had long been planned, and H. C. appeared to have been more worried over his brief address, "Emancipators", than almost anything he had undertaken. The function was held in the huge McEwan Hall and, because of his particular aversion to microphones, Harvey Cushing refused politely but firmly to use the one which was suddenly placed before him without warning, being certain that he would never be able to deliver his address into this new modern contraption, and believing that he could make himself heard without it. Whether the audience did hear him or not is unknown, but he felt the address had been a failure and was extremely sensitive about it, even as was Mr. Lincoln after his Gettysburg address" Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp.457, 55. Rare Offprint with (Rudolf) Magnus (1873-1927) signature and the stamp "Pharmacologisch Instituut Utrecht" on front wrapper! "Presented before the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Society, "February, 1899". "In 1898 when Cushing saw a twenty-eight-year-old man who had suffered for ten years from chronic jejunal fistula, Cushing made observations through the fistula on the bacteriology of the jejunal contents under various conditions. With sterilized food and antiseptic solutions, he was able to render the contents of the jejunum free of microorganisms. After a forty-eight-hour's precaution to guard against intrusion of bacteria, Cushing succeeded in closing the fistula by resection and end-to-end anastomosis."
