This is one of the Old Sturbridge Village Booklet Series. John Obed Curtis filled the gap nicely with his 1971 review of uniforms and equipage pertinent to the militia experience in New England, cir…ca 1812-1845. Curtis and Guthman published a pictorial review of militia artifacts in the collection of Old Sturbridge Village. Curtis became a noted authority on historic preservation. William H. Guthman was a prominent antiques dealer who specialized in items of historical and military Americana and helped make them stars of the collecting world. While working as an executive at a manufacturing company, Mr. Guthman began collecting artifacts of the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. In 1966, he quit his job to become a full-time dealer in Americana of the Colonial and Federal periods, specializing in items from America's earliest militias. He also began writing books and articles on the artifacts and their times. He established Guthman Americana in Westport and exhibited his collections at New York's Winter Antiques Show for 32 years. He was also a guest appraiser on the Public Broadcasting Service's "Antiques Roadshow" for five seasons. Mr. Guthman's books included "March to Massacre: A History of the First Seven Years of the United States Army" (McGraw-Hill, 1974). A militia is generally an army or some other fighting organization of non-professional soldiers, citizens of a country, or subjects of a state, who may perform military service during a time of need, as opposed to a professional force of regular, full-time military personnel. Militias commonly support regular troops by skirmishing, holding fortifications, or conducting irregular warfare, instead of undertaking offensive campaigns by themselves. Local civilian laws often limited militias to serve only in their home region, and to serve only for a limited time; this further reduces their use in long military campaigns.
