In den Warenkorb19 lines on 1p 4to, with integral address leaf, to Mrs Atkyns, Ketteringham Hall, Windham (Wymondham), Norfolk; seal removed, paper repairs to blank areas. T.I. Horsley-Curteis, 1780-1858, a 'High Church Tory' of Gressenhall, Norfolk, was 'Exon of the Guard' (more commonly known as 'Yeoman of the Guard') which in 1810 was still…an active role at Court providing protection to the monarch. This archaic military corps was created by Henry VII in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field. When not at Court to perform his duties, Horsley-Curteis wrote Gothic novels, sometimes using the pseudonyms 'Edward Mortimer' or 'Edward Montague'. He was author of Ethelwina, 1799, Ancient Records, 1801, The Scottish Legend, 1802, The Watch Tower, 1803-04, St. Botolph's Priory, 1806 & The Monk of Udolpho, 1807. Horsley-Curteis's correspondent was another eccentric character of the Regency period, Charlotte Atkyns, née Walpole, a leading actor in the 1770s, daughter of William Walpole of Athlone. She caught the eye of Edward Atkyns of Ketteringham Hall, and their marriage ended Charlotte's acting career. Edward died in 1794, leaving Charlotte at Ketteringham, free to pursue her support for the Tory cause - actively in the Norfolk elections of 1806. She was reported to have spent £80,000 in a determined attempt to save Marie-Antoinette and the Dauphin - Atkyns is believed to have bribed her way in to see Marie-Antoinette while imprisoned at the Conciergerie, but plans to exchange clothes to effect an escape, failed. Atkyns was dismissed by Norfolk Society as 'a common actress' despite being a Walpole, but Horsley-Curteis was clearly happy to share Court gossip with a fellow Tory and Monarchist. At the time of this letter, George III suffered his final relapse into madness, apparently believing he could raise people from the dead and having conversations with deceased relatives such as Princess Amelia. And, as a result of the King's illness, the Regency was established. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.
