Neurology, 11/ 9. - Minneapolis, September 1961, 8°, 778-791, orig. wrappers. Rare Offprint! "From the Departments of Neurology and Ophthalmology, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor. Read on the eighty-fifth annual meeting of the American Neurological Association, Boston, June 13, 1960." "During Determination of th…e prognosis of certain of the brain stem vascular syndromes, some detail had been gathered concerning that of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (Wallenberg's retroolivary or lateral medullary syndrome). This unique neurologic entity has attracted the attention of generations of neurologists since the first report of Alexander Marcet' in 1813, who described the case of another physician who recounted his own symptoms. The list of those who have written since on this subject is extensive, as revealed in the detailed bibliography given bv Louis Bar. It became evident that, in spite of the many reports of this syndrome in the literature and a few detailed analyses, there was much that was unexplained and of interest. Therefore, a further study of our cases was carried out from the point of view of symptomatology and anatomic localization. What follows is a detailed analysis of the symptoms in relation to each other and to the presumed location of the infarct. The ideas presented are gained strictly from clinical analysis and anatomic reasoning; no pathologic correlation was available for the present group of cases. Of the original 75 patients with syndromes of the superior, anterior inferior, and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries, ." Robert D. Currier (1925-2003).

Hardcover. Large folio lithograph (21 x 21 in; 53.3 x 68.6 cm) with handcoloring, after F[rances].F[lora]. Palmer (1812-1876). Loosely laid down on card and enclosed in mylar. (65B1C) In the foreground, a man, woman, and child stand on the banks of Fort Hamilton, while carriages are driven along the shoreline. Fort Lafayette is…situated on a small island in the middle, with Staten Island seen in the distance. Frances Flora Palmer was an English artist who emigrated to the United States sometime in 1844 with her husband Edmund, a lithographer, in the hopes of establishing a lucrative printing business. When their business failed, Nathaniel Currier took over their stock, and hired Palmer to work for his firm. She was associated with Currier and Ives between 1849 and 1868, producing approximately two hundred lithographs, chiefly landscape, flowers, and genre prints. She was also technically proficient in the art of lithography. "[T]he foremost woman lithographer of her time" (Deák), she is credited with assisting Nathaniel Currier in improving lithographic technology. REFERENCE: Conningham 5715; cf. Deák 647.

Unbound. Chromolithograph on wove paper (Image: 20 1/2 x 32 ½ in.; 57.8 x 82.8 cm. Sheet: 28 1/4 x 39 3/4 in.; 72 x 110 cm), being an aerial view of the city with 32 unnumbered references to businesses, schools, houses of worship, railroads, hotels, government offices, and parks and gardens depicted therein. BINDING/CONDITION: L…oosely laid down on sturdy card, enclosed in mylar. (65B2B) A STRIKING GRAND FORMAT VIEW OF ST. LOUIS, THE "GATEWAY TO THE WEST." THE RAREST OF THE CURRIER AND IVES PRINTS. With its ideal natural port for overland commerce returning east and the creation of the transcontinental railroad, St. Louis became a fulcrum of economic activity for agriculture and trade, as well as the departure point for those seeking their fortunes in the mines of the west. Parsons and Atwater's detailed depiction of this sprawling urban center is a testament to its exponential growth in prosperity, particularly along the banks of the Missouri River. "The names of the steamers are as colorful as their appearance, and we can distinguish a good number. Beginning at the left, we see the "Robert E. Lee," the "Natchez," the "Richmond," the "City of Cairo," the "James Howard," the "Memphis," the "De Smet," the "Andy Johnson," the "Great Republic," the "Pike," the "Susie Silver," the "Mississippi," and the "Cahokia" (Deák, p. 566). Some of the landmarks that are pointed out in the 32 captioned references are: Shaw's Botanical Garden, the Compton Hill Reservoir, the market, the Insane Asylum, three railroad depots-including the Pacific and the Missouri railroads-City Hall, the Laclede Hotel, Missouri Park, St. Louis University, and the Court House with its magnificent neo-classical dome. Sheet: 13 1/2 x 17 1/2 in.; 34.4 x 44.7 cm) depicting a moonlight race between the steamboats "Memphis" and "James Howard," Small "M" signed into the stone in the lower lefthand corner. BINDING/CONDITION: Matted. Nea…t repair to a minor tear. (65B2B) This issue is a similar in composition to the large folio print issued in about 1860, with the name of the steamers altered to "Memphis" and "James Howard" and a slight repositioning of the figures on board. It was also issued as a gift premium by "The Home Companion" magazine. One some copies below the Currier and Ives copyright notice and the title is a line reading "Given to the Subscribers to the Home Companion - Published by S.L. Thorpe, Cleveland, Ohio. Currier and Ives produced more than 200 lithographs depicting the steamboats that navigated the nation's great rivers, such as the Mississippi and the Hudson. Races between boats were often organized and commemorated in prints such as this contest between the Memphis and James Howard. Mark Twain described the races in "Life on the Mississippi" (1883) as events of vast importance. Dates for these contests were set several weeks in advance with large sums of money wagered on them. The captains often overlooked safety in favor of winning the race: piloting was reckless, hazarding boiler explosions and fires that destroyed many vessels. The "James Howard," for example, was destroyed by fire in 1881. In four decades since the introduction of the steamboat in 1807, nearly 500 boats were destroyed in accidents and nearly 4,000 people lost their lives. (65B2B) A VIVIDLY COLORED EXAMPLE OF ONE OF CURRIER AND IVES MOST ICONIC IMAGES OF THE AMERICAN WEST. "Another exciting episode of prairie life. In the foreground an old buffalo bull, driven to desperation, is charging at full gallop on the hunter, who, without slackening the speed of his horse, maneuvers to avoid the horns of the infuriated animal; another mounted hunter in the background is discharging his rifle at the buffalo. Others of the here are seen lying wounded on the ground, or galloping off in the distance." (quoted In "The New Best 50" from Currier and Ives's 1864 "Descriptive Catalogue of Prints"). Unbound. Hand-colored lithograph heightened with gum arabic on wove paper (Image: 18 x 27 3/4 in.; 45.7 x 70.5 cm. Sheet: 23 x 31 3/4 in.; 58.4 x 80.7 cm), showing the steamboats "Natchez" and "Eclipse" in a heated contest. (65B2B) ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING LITHOGRAPHIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE NINETEETH CENTURY. According to the ori…ginal and extensive "Descriptive Catalogue of Prints" published by Currier and Ives in 1864, this lithograph is "[a] spirited representation of one of those exciting scenes that sometimes occur when rival steamers are running opposition on the river. In the picture before us, are two of these high-pressure boats, apparently closely matched in size coming down the stream 'neck and neck.' The volumes of flame vomited forth from the smoke stacks, and clouds of steam from the escape pipes, as well as the glare of the furnaces on the lower deck, indicate that they are being driven to their utmost speed. From the brilliantly-lighted saloons many of the passengers have come out on deck, in the moonlight, to see the race, and share its excitement."
