James William Herries was a Scottish journalist, and was chief reporter for The Scotsman newspaper in the 1930s and '40s. In this book he describes a journey he made along the rivers Tweed and Tay in a skin-covered coracle. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and a little staining on the boards. The top of the spine is lightly bumped and there is slightly heavier bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and a name and date (1925) has been written on the front free endpaper. Henry W. Erste und einzige Ausgabe des Hauptwerks von John Curr (1756-1823) einem sogenannten coal-viewer, eine ursprünglichen Bezeichnung für einen Bergbauingenieurs. Curr war ein englischer Bergbauingenieur und Erfinder, der von 1781 bis 1801 als Inspektor der Kohlengruben des Herzogs von Norfolk im englischen Sheffield fungierte. Während dieser Zeit schuf er eine Reihe von Innovationen, die maßgeblich zur Entwicklung des Kohlebergbaus und der Eisenbahn beitrugen. Er beschreibt in diesem Buch erstmalig seiner Erfindung einer Bahn mit Eisenrädern auf Eisenschienen, die die Arbeit in den Kohleminen und weit darüber hinaus revolutionierte. In den von ihm entworfenen Kohleloren konnten bis zu 2000 zusätzliche Einheiten bewegt werden und die Arbeitsbelastung enorm erleichtert werden. Owner?s blind stamp on front free endpaper and bookseller?s slip on pastedown. SOLE EDITION of the principal printed source for John Curr (1756?1823), a ?coal viewer?, i.e. a mining engineer, and of his inventions and technical innovations, including the first printed account of an iron railway. ?His first invention was the flanged cast-iron railway?described as ?plate ways? or ?railroads? which were the first flanged iron rails installed underground for the hauling of coal? Curr?s use of iron rails dramatically improved the hurrying of coal by reducing the number of horses needed to pull the corves [i.e., baskets of coal], and by enabling an additional 2000 corves to be moved annually?? (ODNB). The idea of plate rails was taken up by the engineer Benjamin Outram, who became a leading promoter of their use. ?Curr also sought to improve the efficiency of the steam engine, and discovered that raising the cistern higher above the cylinder produced a stronger vacuum without additional fuel. For these experiments he became an acknowledged expert in the construction of atmospheric steam engines and was regarded as a successor to John Smeaton. In 1797 [in the present book] he published plans and descriptions of his modified Newcomen steam engines, with detailed comparisons between the power of different types of boiler? (ibid).
