Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good-. Limited Edition. Privately printed, 1926. 8vo. 30[1]pp. Bound in plain card stock, printed black paper jacket with title on front cover and author's initials. Jacket rubbed, crease to both folds. Book in fine condition, unopened, text printed in black and red, red design on top margin each page. With edge-worn, black board slipcase, open at both vertical edges, large orange manuscript initials "F.P.S." on one side. Harry Francis Cunningham (1888-1959) was a noted architect from Nebraska, known especially for his design contribution and involvement with the Bertram G. Goodhue Nebraska State Capital in Lincoln, Nebraska. Inscribed & signed by Cunningham in light blue ink on the front endpaper: "To Frank (F.P.S.) who provides most of one's inspiration - Harry 9th July 1926". According to a penciled note on a separate card laid in, FPS is Francis P. Sullivan [orange initials on slipcase). Limitation leaf states that William Dana Orcutt printed and bound 100 copies. Also on the front free endpaper, Cunningham crossed through "are" and substituted "is" [for sale], from which his light blue line leads to his inked comment: "W.L.S. called my attention to this awful Bull which, however, G.B.S. makes with impunity H.F.C." GBS initials probably for George Bernard Shaw; not clear who FPS is. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 31 pages; Signed by Author.

The magazine had 14 issues and was published from January 1968 to July 1971. From January, 1968, through July, 1971, Ginzburg published Avant Garde. While it could not be termed obscene, it was filled with creative imagery often caustically critical of American society and government, sexual themes, and (for the time) crude language.Avant Garde had a modest circulation but was extremely popular in certain circles, including New York's advertising and editorial art directors. Herbert F. Lubalin (1918-1981), a post-modern design guru, was Ginzburg's collaborator on his four best-known magazines, including Avant Garde, which gave birth to a well-known typeface of the same name. It was originally intended primarily for use in logos: the first version consisted solely of 26 capital letters. It was inspired by Ginzburg and his wife, designed by Lubalin, and realized by Lubalin's assistants and Tom Carnese, one of Lubalin's partners. It is characterized by geometrically perfect round strokes; short, straight lines; and an extremely large number of kerned ligatures. The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) (of which Lubalin was a founder) released a full version in 1970."--wikipedia ; G. Book.

Goodhue Associates during the tower construction phase of the Nebraska Capitol, 1926-1930, then as founder and first chairman of the Department of Architecture in the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska in 1930, where he served as chair until 1934. Cunningham was born in Washington, D. C. on April 15, 1888. After high school he studied both in the United States and France, taking his first architecture job back home with the supervising architects of the U. S. Treasury in 1907.
