Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Serpins (serine protease inhibitors) are a superfamily of proteins whose physiologi cal action is primarily targeted to inhibiting serine proteases. There are instances where serpins are not inhibitors (and can carry steroid hormones for instance), yet key structural and functional elements found in all serpins are maintained in these 'non-inhibitor' ser pins. Many serpins have well-described biological properties which influence pathophysi ological events, including: antithrombin (historically called antithrombin III), ai-protease inhibitor (historically called ai-antitrypsin), and plasminogen activator inhibitor-I, just to mention a few. A deficiency or defect in antithrombin leads to venous thromboembolic disease, while a deficiency or defect in ai-protease inhibitor is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema. In contrast, it has been suggested that increased levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-l may be a predisposition to myocardial infarction. The list goes on for each of our own 'favorite' serpin. The biological roles found for serpins are key participants in almost every physiological event. In other words, serine proteases are needed for many events in biology and the role of serpins to down regulate these pro teases is essential. Thus, just using these three examples above for serpins and their patho physiological roles reminds us that the medical costs to control such events is significant worldwide.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A near complete set of original stereoscopic photographs depicting the progressive dissection of human bodies, in very good condition. Each photograph is mounted to card stock and designed for viewing through a stereoscopic viewer (not included.) This New Revised Edition was produced in 1911 (with 74 images more than the previous issue) to aid medical students in familiarizing themselves with human anatomy in advance of the increasingly expensive dissection of an actual body. The set includes 321 original b&w silver gelatin stereoscopic photographs, each 6.25 x 3.5 inches with two images, mounted to a 7- x 9-inch card. The images are mounted at the bottom of each card with small numbers corresponding to the descriptions above the images. They are housed in 10 slipcases with mounted labels to the spine and a tray containing the images and title cards. A total of 331 of the original 335 cards (4 cards missing). CONDITION: The images are all very good though some have faded and/or yellowed slightly; the cards are very good, though most have a slight curve to them. The slipcases are in good, fair, or poor condition, all showing degrees of shelf wear from moderate to considerable. Slipcases 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9 are black cloth or paper over boards. The slipcases to 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 are tan and complete with both the outer and inner trays present. Slipcase 1 is missing its inner tray; Slipcase 3's inner tray is missing the bottom panel and one side is detached. For trays 7 and 9, the outer slipcases with spine labels are missing (See photos). Each volume will be carefully wrapped and padded in a shipment of 2 or more sturdy cartons. Zustand: Near Fine. Twenty-four 9 x 7 inch teaching cards plus index/title card. Contained in a cloth box with paper spine labels. Each card is marked "The Edinburgh Stereoscopic Atlas of Anatomy" at the top, with a pasted on label identifying the section and number for that card (The first card notes Section I--No.1). The cards all have extensive printed text at the top identifying what the view shows and anatomical features of note. Below that is mounted a 3 1/2 x 6 7/8 inch stereoview [stereogram] which is a silver print (photograph). The card is designed to be inserted into a stereoviewer to show a three dimensional view of the anatomy pictured. In the stereoview negative are small tags that are numbered or lettered that key to the explanation above so the student can easily see what each area being discussed is. This is Section I (complete). A second section was also issued with different cards on the same anatomical areas. The card set is overall in fine condition, noting that several of the cards are on a darker card stock (either sunned, or perhaps from another set). The whole enclosed in a box with ribbon for easy removal (minor wear, creases and label fading to the box). These stereoscopic study sets were issued by a small group of publishers in the late 19th/early 20th century. They served as didactic (educational) tools for anatomy students at a time when actual cadavers were becoming more difficult to source in some parts of the country. Not only did they provide a three dimensional view, but they were in some ways easier to use without the smell associated with preserved cadavers. As stereoscopic cards, they lent a three-dimensional view to the student which although it didn't replace actual dissection work was far better than images in a book. Each photograph is keyed with small numbers identifying the features marked in the negative. Each number is identified in the printed text for easy identification. While not dated, we believe these to were produced in the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Scarce, with only two examples of this title in OCLC/Worldcat by this publisher (each with both sections). There is a another example that was apparently published by Keystone, another stereoscopic view publisher with only one institutional holder dated between 1900 and 1930.…
