Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. First edition. A collection of Scottish folk ballads, accompanied by humorous accounts of peasant traditions and superstitions. The first edition of this work, edited by and with an engraved title page from Robert Hartley Cromek, an English engraver, editor, art dealer and entrepreneur.Featuring numerous poems subdivided into sections such as 'sentimental ballads', 'humorous ballads' and 'Jacobite ballads', the work also has an appendix containing some fascinating accounts of Scottish customs and traditions, including Scottish Games, a History of Witchcraft and 'Character of the Scottish Lowland Faeries'.While this is ostensibly a collection of purely traditional Scottish ballads, aspiring poet and author Allan Cunningham secretly supplied imitation ballads of his own authorship. Cromek included these in the collection, despite allegedly doubting their authenticity.A label to the recto of the front free endpaper attributes the binding of this work to 'R. Nelson, Glasgow'. In a signed straight grain morocco binding with paper covered boards. Slight rubbing to joints and extremities and boards. Binder's label to recto of front free endpaper. Firmly bound. The odd mark, but pages generally clean and bright. Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). book.
