Gilt Decorated Cloth. Zustand: Good. 84 pp. Gilt decorated maroon cloth. Poems by various authors, including Sir Walter Scott. With colour illustrations by J. C. Horsley, Edward Duncan, G. H. Thomas, Edwin H. Corbould, Birket Foster, C. W. Cope, Harrison Weir, etc. Printed in colour by Edmund Evan. Front board and spine have come loos, but the leaves remain tightly bound. Rubbing at fraying to the cloth at spine and corners, alongside markings to the boards. Inscriptions to the first free endpaper and title page. 8vo. Illustrated.

Original red cloth binding, expertly rebacked with leather hinges, ornate gilt decoration to the spine and front board, some blind stamped decoration to front and rear board, a little faded, edges bevelled, cloth a little worn to edges and corners, firm. Contents firm, new end-papers, a little light foxing scattered on some pages, but not detracting from text or clean plates, no inscriptions or signatures. A very good complete copy. Size: 8vo. Book.

Ink inscription from a previous owner on the front end page and half title page. The following plates are missing: No. 2, Pg 6; No. 6, Pg 14; No. 8, Pg 18; No. 10, Pg 22; and No. 29, frontispiece. The following plates are stained: No. 1, 7, 9, 11, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, and 28. The pages are lightly browned due to age. There are no other ink inscriptions or annotations. FIRST EDITION, printed on heavy card paper, preliminary pages printed within double rule red border, additional title-page and ornamental borders to each page printed in colour from wood blocks, pp. [72], 16mo, full green morocoo, covers with gilt roll borders and at board edges and turn-ins, spine and edges profusely gilt, neatly rebacked, very good. An extremely pretty anthology produced by the Chiswick Press, in which decorations 'of an Italian character of design' grace each poem ('Preface'). Books printed in colour by the Chiswick Press 'are few, but fine' and this work is 'a charming little volume [.] it is now a collector's piece' (McLean).
