His masterpiece "De Republyk Der Hebreen" is considered "the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic." (Tuck, Richard, Philosophy and government, 1572-1651, Cambridge, 1993, p. 169). De Republica Hebraeorum (also known as Respublica Hebraeorum and The Hebrew Republic) describes the ancient Hebrew kingdom as a model of republican government. The work was highly acclaimed and published in at least seven editions between 1617 and 1700. This copy is magnificently illustrated with 16 fine engravings (including 8 folding). Vellum age-toned. Obra muito célebre, que foi traduzida para holandês, francês e inglês. O autor apresenta uma leitura inovadora para a época, ainda que políticamente motivada e com um ponto de vista protestante, segundo a qual defende que o Estado Hebreu era de uma qualidade mais elevada que os modelos Grego e Romano, pois o seu Deus era o verdadeiro Deus. Assim o Estado Hebreu, nomeadamente na época do primeiro Templo e da Monarquia Unida de Saul, David e Salomão, é apresentado pelo autor como um arquétipo de uma república ideal e em especial da nova República Holandesa, na época designada por Províncias Unidas. Para defender esta tese, van der Kun recorre aos seus enormes conhecimentos da tradição rabínica, da Tora, do Talmud, da Bíblia e das obras de Josefo, das quais era um dos maiores peritos na altura. Petrus Cunaeus (Vlissingen, 1586 - Leiden, 1638) nome latinizado de Peter van der Kun.
